First trip to California

Hi everyone.

After multiple visits to Florida, we are thinking of visiting California during May 2019. We are a family of four, youngest will be 14.

I am getting excited of the thought of this trip but the trouble is I have no idea where to start. I know we would like to visit Los Angeles, but after that our options are totally open. Where is reachable by car from LA?

We will be flying in from the UK - which airport would be the best?

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thank you 😊

We are Florida "veterans" and made our first trip to California last year. We flew into San Francisco, spent 3 nights there then drove down the coast road to monterey for a night then onto to Anaheim for 6 nights and flew back from LAX.

As we only had a short amount of time we based ourselves in Anaheim and spent 2 days in disney, 3 would have been better and 1 day at Knotts Berry Farm. We drove into LA for the Hollywood stuff and to Santa Monica and Venice beaches on another day. Six flags was only open at weekends when we were there, November, and we really didn't have time to do Universal.

There really is so many options you will have to have a look and see what interests you as a family and plan around that. My one bit of advice is don't underestimate the distances involved between places or the time it can take to drive between them. The traffic in and around LA can be horrendous and even the shortest journeys can take forever at the wrong time of day.

Well anything’s reachable by car given enough time but probably a good idea to start with Top Questions here and on the various forums. A popular 3 -4 week loop is often LA, Anaheim, San Diego, maybe outside the state to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, Death Valley Yosemite, San Francisco, Monterey/Big Sur, Santa Barbara and back to LA. Hard to be specific though without knowing you and your interests so maybe look at those forums Top Questions and see what interests you. LA, Anaheim and San Diego could easily fill 2 weeks on their own.

All the best.

Let people know how many days you have for this visit, as that will be helpful to know rather than just guessing, and people can give more specific suggestions.

Where did you want to visit in California? Its a huge State, and things are going to be more spread out as far as things to do vs Florida. Will you rent a car? Were you planning on visiting Disneyland? That would be in Anaheim which is about a 1 hour drive South of the LA area. Somewhere like San Diego.. is about a 2 hour drive South of Anaheim.
