Atlanta to Gatlinburg to smoky mountain then Washington

Hi all, my husband and I plus our 11 year old girl are planning to fly in to Atlanta from Miami and subsequently drive to Gatlinburg and smoky mountain then to WDC. Our scheduled trip is August 9-13th

our plan is :-

on the 9th Aug

- arriving in airport take the car rental and stay 1 nite in Atlanta before driving to Gatlinburg or smoky Mt the next day

1)my question is can we drive straight to Gatlinburg from airport without staying a nite in Atlanta?

2) if we have to stay where to stay in Atlanta?

10th Aug-12th Aug

From Atlanta drive to Gatlinburg/smoky Mountain stay 3 nites

1) Where to stay ,Gatlinburg or Smoky mountain area? any suggestion?

2) is 3 nites too many in Smoky Mt/Gatlinburg ?

13th Aug

Drive from Gatlinburg or smoky mountain to WDC stopping at Blacksburg for a nite as suggested by a traveller in this forum.

Please advise, thank you.

1) In theory yes, but it would be a long drive after getting up and catching a flight. It's about 200 miles.

2) If all you're doing is spending the night, I'd just get a good hotel near the airport and leave from there. Take I-285 around the east side of town to I-85, I-985, and US-441.

1) If you haven't already, post in the Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge forum, also check TA and the tourism websites.

2) IMO, yes, but you haven't said what your interests are or what you plan to do.

Blacksburg or Roanoke would be a good stopping place.

What time does your flight from Miami arrive in Atlanta?

Your profile says you are from Kuala Lumpur so can we assume you are flying from there to Miami? Are you staying overnight in Miami at all?

Like Stevedec said, You need to be sure and get a good nights rest before driving from Atlanta to the Smoky Mountains assuming you are traveling from overseas.

Morning from Malaysia !

Thank you so much for the quick replies. We will actually be in Orlando for a week and then travel to Miami for 3/4 days . From Miami we wanted to visit Smoky Mt, then drive to Washington dc, then to philly then new york and return to Malaysia from NYC , hence we plan our flight to Atlanta from Miami and drive to GSM and all the way to new york.

Our flight to Atlanta has not been booked but we found flight in the morning abt 11am arriving atlanta at 1pm.

1) Is it better to fly to Knoxville instead of Atlanta ?We can either stay a nite in knoxville if necessary or drive straight to Gatlinburg which i saw is abt 1.45hr drive from Knoxville?

2. We don't have any particular interest in GSM but heard so much about it from friends telling us to visit. We are good with moderate hiking trails (due to our 11yo girl ) , waterfalls and enjoying the natural scenic view in GSM. Will be happy to hear your suggestions. We have 3 nites in GSM.

3) please also suggest places to stay. Is Gatlinburg a good place to stay?

Thank you so much. Truly appreciate all replies.

By the way we have also heard about the Blue Ridge Parkway to Washington , is it a good drive ? seems like a very very long drive when i checked.

We found a route from one of this forum which bring us from Gatlinburg to Hot spring Resort and spa - Kingsport- Atkins- Blacksburg for a nite. Next day - Humpback Rocks - Warrenton - WDC .

Would love to dive via Blue Ridge if is doable with a 1 nite break and if it has better sceneries.

Thank you.

Re: places to stay -

* have you looked here on TA for hotels and reviews? That's what this site is all about

* as suggested before, have you posted on the forums for some the places, like Gatlinburg, etc. to ask that question. You shouldn't expect that folks here on the Georgia form would have had experience with particular town in Tennessee.

In addition to posting in the appropriate town/state forums as suggested by Stevedec about road trip ideas, you could also post in the very useful Road Trips Forum:

https:/…ShowForum-g1-i12567-Road_Trips.html

Also, as far as deciding between flying into Atlanta or Knoxville, keep in mind you want to avoid Atlanta rush hour which starts about 3 pm. Arriving in Atlanta about 1:00 would probably put you on the road about 2-2:30 (depending on if you have checked bags, how long getting a car rental takes) which is on the cusp of rush hour. I would assume Knoxville rush hour is about the same start but you could post on that forum to confirm.

We vacation often, in a little place right against GSMNP, and have flown into ATL, and driven to GSMNP several times.

As we are coming from either Phoenix, or so,etimes San Francisco, we usually fly into ATL, then stay at the ATL Airport Hilton. We pick up the car the next morning, and take a leisurely drive to Townsend, TN, not too far from Gatlinburg. We have alternated the routes, and go for scenic, over quickest - stopping along the way.

We have also flown into TYS, and then either driven, or used a car service to Townsend. As the place we stay has a fleet of loaner Lexus cars, we seldom rent at TYS.

Last year, we flew into IAD very near Washington, then drove Akylime Drive, and Blue Ridge Prkway. Lovely, and very scenic, albeit somewhat slow drive. In that case, we stayed in Knoxville for the night, then drove down to Townsend the next day. The Interstates between, say Knoxville and DC are pretty, and quicker - but again, we love the back roads.

We are not fans of either Gatlinburg, or Pigeon Forge, though we love the surrounding area greatly. For us, the combo of the little resort, Blackberry Farm, plus the wonderful, and beautiful GSMNP are the big draws.

For accommodations in/near Gatlinburg, do post to that Forum, as several of the regulars, such as “Goldrush Junkie,” know the lodging situation well.

Almost any route to the Smokies, from Atlanta, will be beautiful, even if one were to stay mostly on an Interstate, or major highways. Now, we usually take different “back roads,” so getting to the GSMNP is part of the fun.

Just a lovely part of the USA.

Enjoy!

Hunt

Regarding #7, we DO work to avoid Atlanta rush hours, like we do with most major cities.

If one flew into TYS, the airport is outside of the city if Knoxville, really in Maryville/Alcoa, and right against the mountains. From TYS to Gatlinburg, I would recommend Hwy 321 to Townsend, then through Wears Valley (lovely mountain road) to Pigeon Forge, to Gatlinburg, or even better, Hwy 321 to Townsend, then into the GSMNP, to Gatlinburg. Less traffic that way. No need to get into Knoxville, though it is a lovely city, if one wished to overnight.

Travel safely,

Hunt
