Where to stay in the coast of New Jersey

We are a family from Europe and driving from Virginia Beach to somewhere in New Jersey to stay over for 1 night in July (heading to Boston). Which coast city would be the best to stay overnight? Something less touristique maybe? Cape May, Surf City etc?

I would appreciate any advice because we know hardly anything about the area!

Just a FYI, the shore towns in NJ aren't particularly close to the route you'd use to get from Virginia to Boston unless you're taking the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the Lewes-Cape May Ferry, and the Garden State Parkway. If you're coming up I-95 the shore points in NJ are mostly out of your way.

July is right in the middle of our busiest tourist season so finding something with few tourists may be hard. Also, a one night stay may be a problem but less so during the week rather than a weekend.

Take a look at Spring Lake. it is a lovely family town and may suit you.

But, since you are spending time in Virginia Beach maybe reconsider another coastal town. There are some nice, interesting places not along the coast. Princeton, for example would make a nice stop.

Thanks for your reply! We are actually planning to take some scenic route (Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and the Lewes-Cape May Ferry) so we don't mind going off the main route.

If you are entering NJ on the Ferry....then Cape May is great. Princeton would be west of where you would travel to continue on to Boston. You could look at places to stay on Long Beach Island. Just click on "Long Beach Island" in the previous sentence and then explore the lodging opportunities.
