Capitol Reef: Less than a full day

Hello -

Our last day in Utah will be waking up in Torrey to see Capitol Reef. We need to be in SLC that evening for our early flight the next day. Could you please advice what to prioritize in CR. It's a bit overwhelming and am not sure whether or not we should do a tour or a hike. It's so little time and appreciate your input. What to see? How? If no hiking, is there a tour company that you might recommend. Once again, thank you!

Get an early start and hike to Hickman Bridge. You can stop at the petroglyphs that are just off highway 12 before the trailhead to Hickman Bridge. You could walk Grand Wash from highway 24 trailhead as far as the Narrows. Drive the 20 mile round trip scenic drive. Stop in the Fruita area for pie at the Gifford House.

Be sure you have plenty of water and sun protection for the Hickman Bridge hike. There’s little shade. You may want to pick up some sandwiches at the deli inside the General Store at Austin’s Chuckwagon Lodge and picnic in the park.

There’s now a food truck in Torrey. Capitol Burger parks at the Days Inn during lunch and parks at Austin’s Chuckwagon at dinner. Had a burger from there tonight. It was great.

It’s a 3.5 hour drive to SLC from Torrey. You could leave Torrey as late as 5 or 6.and be in SLC by about 9.

You really could spend most of the day in Capitol Reef since you'll be spending the night in SLC.

You can see all the the stops along the main road through the park. Hike Hickman Bridge, and Capitol Gorge, visit the orchards if there is fruit on while you are there.

There is quite a bit more to Capitol Reef that the above, however those are the areas most visitors see their first trip and would not be a difficult plan at all.

No need for a tour. Suggestions: drive the scenic drive. Here is a great description of some hikes:

With the short time you have you should stick to the developed area of the park, next time you come take a guided tour of the back country.
