8th graders - ideas for fun stuff in DC

Hi - another mom and I are taking our 8th grade girls to DC over spring break (along with a lot of other schools across the country).

A number of years ago I worked for a company in DC and had spent quite a few weekends there so I kind of know the basics however that was before 1995, which of course is before 9/11 so security and much has changed.

what I am looking for is some great ideas for kids of that age. Tours related to National Treasure, monuments about women/girls, Dan Brown type tours (we will read his book before we go) or ghost/grave tours.

We will also go to Philadelphia.

Thanks so much for any input!

As far as general security, I don't think you will find it to be too difficult. Just use common sense and don't do things that would slow you down. Don't tote too large of a bag around. And leave things that would give security guards screening bags headaches at the hotel. Things like nail grooming sets, etc.

Some places you will go through metal detectors and have to put your bag through to be x-rayed such as the Capitol building. Other places such as the Natural History museum, a guard will simply ask to look in your bag. No place should you find massive security lines or be asked to take off shoes, etc. like you would find courtesy of TSA in an airport.

And of course, certain things require pre-reservations such as timed tickets to go up in the Washington Monument. Visiting the White House requires a little more work. There is plenty of information available in this forum on that process.

Here are a list of tours/monuments/memorials/museums that might fit your request. I have no personal knowledge of the tours so I can't vouch for them.

Library of Congress is a great building and is right behind the capitol. can probably combine both tours, maybe with lunch at union station
