There is a Costco an a Wallmart near the airport. Same groceries but a better price than at the resorts.
We are actually looking for meat that has been marinated. Also would like to shop at locally owned stores. Looking for a piece of "maui" :)
Thanks for the suggestion because Costco does have good options.
Believe it or not the best place to find the best beef on Maui is at Long's Drugstore. They sell locally raised beef that is out of this world. You would have to get there early as they sell out quickly.
Also try the Fish Market Maui in Honokawai. They sell dinner portions of fresh catch and a choice of marinades that you can take to your condo and put on the grill.
You want meat that has been marinated hmmmmm
The grocery and meat business is a funny one, alot of the times, the meat that is Pre Marinated for you in the grocery stores cold cases is NOT Fresh Meat, (Poultry/Seafood included)
It can be OLD meat or very soon to expire meat that is "Masked" by the marinade.
One way to get fresh meat is to buy UNMARINATED meats and marinate yourself.
You can buy or bring your own marinades.
Marinades come in dry packages or liquid (bottles/cans etc)
last week i went to lahaina and Lahaina Farms has a very nice old fashioned butcher shop, you can pick out the meat you want, and they will add spices/marinade to it.
That ensures you get freher meats.
Lahaina Farms is not cheap or inexpensive, but worth it to me.Edited: 11 January 2010, 14:58
I like the newer store on Highway 31 at Kihei. It has a clean and well stocked meat department. They have both non-marinated (with lots of bottled sauces available) as well as ready to cook.
The store is a very busy place so nothing has a chance to get too old.
As in any store, watch packaged date on container to avoid an oversight.
Happy Grilling !
Oh Goodness, No...."marinated meat" from the grocery.......??
Ever since we saw that "Expose" on one of those TV news magazine shows awhile back....... about how the grocery stores with poor practices were adding marinades to mask the spoilage odor...Yikes!! The show did Lab testing on those packages and the results were unbelievable.
Costco has some of the freshest choices anywhere......they move a lot of product and also employ many locals and residents in their stores.
We have a routine of pulling out of the airport and right into Costco before hitting the condo. We always get the 4 pak of filet mignon as well as anything else that strikes our fancy. Costco also makes a great whole cooked chicken. If you are tired from the flight you can eat that right away with some bread and a nice salad. Or you can do all kinds of things with the chicken the next day.
We don't like to make second Costco trips so any other meats we get at Safeway or Foodland.
