Self drive safari/out of the way tribal group

At the risk of sounding snobbish my husband and I are old so we've been fortunate to do a lot of travel and do many safaris. If we go to Tanzania we would like to wander on our own (if possible). So, driving ourselves would be ideal.

We'd like to visit tribal groups away from civilization (yes, we will need a guide for this).

In Kenya we went on a 6 days walking safari with local guides who set up tents for us each night and prepared meals. Naturally, it was great.

I've looked at the tour operators suggested but haven't seen anything that seems like what we are after.

Thank you, for your time and any suggestions.

I know of three areas on the Northern Safari circuit that might suit you. Lolkisale, Lake Babati and Lake Eyasi.

Lolkisale would be good for the Masai, you can walk among the villages, visit clinics and schools.

Lake Babati for different tribes and at Lake Eyasi you can go hunting with the tribes that live there.

I think you would need a guide otherwise it will be difficult to get to these out of the way places.

You need local guide while you visit such like lake eyasi from local community office where you need to do payment for village visit as same as lake matron there is gate where you need to do also payment and pick a local guide as same as maasai village visit.

Well you can go seft drive and pitch your tents but some area you need local guide.

Safarieyes, Thanks for you info. Ahhh, we don't want to pitch our own tent not only because of the hauling around the equipment but ahhhh, I guess we're lazy.

I will look into the tribal groups around Lake Eyasi.

For walking safaris, look at Kichaka Expeditions in Ruaha.

Hi

Or 3 day hike from Ngorongoro to Lake Natron, with a Masai guide and using donkeys to carry camp :-)

I would try Lolkisale and or Lake Eyasi, Monduli and the Usambara Mountains, Lake Natron, most of these areas you wouldn't have to pay park fees either.
