Car Hire and Currency Convertion

Hi, are there any budget car hire options in Lilongwe that still offer decent insurance cover? I'm looking for a small 4x4 (an older but reliable car is fine) for under $50/day (including insurance and tax), happy to pay a rate per km though.

Also, what is the most cost effective currency to pay in? Does everyone take $US or should we change money into Kwacha? If Kwacha, where is the best place to change (we'll have time at the airport or in Lilongwe).

Many thanks in advance.

I would suggest having both US$ and kwacha. Since you will hire a car you will need to pay for fuel in kwacha at the gas station. Most lodges accept US$ so they would allow you to pay accommodation and food in $

You can change at the airport there are bureaus or anywhere you find Victoria forex bureau

this may come as a surprise but there are few countries that accept US$ for everyday transactions - sure some upmarket places might price in and accept $ but you are probably paying through the nose
