Do you mean $500 per person or for the whole family?

Lower Zambezi is not a cheap park, there are not really any cheap options inside the park. Just outside is Chongwe which is less expensive than those inside the park. Then if you go further along the river there are less expensive options but these are not really in Lower zambezi, but they are on the river and will offer river activities. I am not really familiar with all of these, the one I am aware of is Kanyemba. But they are not really in Lower Zambezi- looks like they can offer all day trips into the park but it is 45km away and will take 1.5 hours to get there. I also note from their website that the minimum age for these all day trips is 12.

If you are really interested in the river activities, then something like that might work as they are on the river. But for river trips, you might find your children are too young (definitely for canoeing).

I don't know sorry, but I suspect they might be similar to Kanyemba- Kiambi certainly looks like it is in the same location. I know there are quite a lot of places along the river (I've seen them from a canoe!), but how close they are to Lower Zambezi national park itself you would have to check with them, and also check age limits for any activities they offer.

Mvuu is just outside Park gate, only 45min to gate, and it's reasonably priced (by Zambian standards!) - around $160 for adults full board. They have a cheaper rate for children.

Sunset cruise is included but game drives not. If you have your own vehicle then you can hire guide at lodge for only $18/day for the whole group. This is a cheap way to do game drives. Alternatively tell lodge to organise game drives, think per vehicle for 4 is not so expensive.

Kiambi is a bit cheaper but further from park gate, about 1hr 30min. I prefer Mvuu.

Please note that everything in zambia is horrendously expensive. But the country has many beautiful attractions and amazing people (most of them, they have specialised fraudsters too).

If you look carefully you will find that particular camp or lodge which has a bit better acceptable price tag. Otherwise you will not regret visiting.

Hi,

Yes,I do find Zambia costly in terms of tourism compared to other countries which is a shame as it has so much to offer.

Okay ,now the next big expense is game drive.........though we plan to do some on our own but one with guide and proper vehicle does give that authentic feel.............again,I am hardly able to find any tour operators in area with day tours. The one offered by lodge is very very high priced at about 600 $ for family of 4.Is it the norm........am I being very budget conscious?

$600 is very expensive. If you have a 4x4 vehicle that you are using to go to LZNP, then best to hire an official guide (from the lodge) at $18/day and use your vehicle. You must book this in advance. I don't think in LZNP you will miss an open vehicle.

You can also do a walking safari with them too, think for 1/2 day its $45/person including transfer to walking area, guide and ZAWA official.

Then you can do more authentic safaris in open vehicle in South Luangwa - there these are much cheaper - and you encounter a lot of wildlife. Not sure if you are going there though.

I don't think there are any tour companies offering just day safaris in LZNP - normally these are done by the lodge.

Hi,

even I thought that 600 is way too high but after checking the exorbitant rates of lodges I wasn't sure. Thanks for reply......

If you are into camping you can camp at Mvuu - they have very beautiful sites over the river - this way you will reduce the price considerably.

In my opinion the exorbitant prices are keeping tourist away. When we where at Mvuu last month, we were the only couple at the lodge! All other chalets empty. When we spoke to our guide, he told us that especially this year, most of the lodges have few guests. And in other parks in Zambia the lodge prices are worse.
