Driving the Hai Van pass

Hi,

has anyone had any experience driving the pass themselves? i'm not a biker and don't imagine this is the place to start. what are the road conditions and traffic like? we'll probably go from Hoi an to Hue or vice versa.

Thanks,

Dan

Quite a few times. Enjoy it if going anyway, just don't go for the sake of going, it's not that grand.

Ok, we're looking at visiting Hue and Hoi An, might as well enjoy the journey rather than get on a bus.

Driving?

As in drive yourself?

Where do you plan to get a car? Does your country issue IDPs which are recognised in Vietnam?

Mine does. Now. But I drove bikes and cars using Vietnamese permits.

We went as recent as two weeks ago transferring from Hue to Hoi An the traffic wasn’t heavy at all and road is good. Worse case you may get stuck behind buses but really we thought the roads pretty good if you take your time. It was less impressive than I thought it would be but we stopped to see the American bunkers and reflect on the past, good views to the north and south. I would suggest a local private driver one who is happy to stop when & where you want. Ours took us to Lang Co beach for seafood lunch and that was very nice.
