We are heading off to Tonga next week and I can't seem to find any info on tours. Can anyone recommend one to do? Thanks Loren
From what I read (we are planning a trip to Tonga for August 2015), it's kind of a DIY place or you find a cab driver and pay him off for the day to give you a "tour". Please let us know how it goes!!! There aren't many up-to-date posts on Tonga.
Pop into the brand new Visitor Information Centre in Nuku'alofa on the waterfront - they are really helpful, and will put you in touch with the local tour guides
In you're specifically looking for tours on Tongatapu, The Visitor Information Centre is a good resource, as is Friends Café tourist center, on Taufa'ahau Rd. right in the center of Nuku'alofa. Friends Café is also a great stop of coffee or a meal - wonderful food, and a fun place heavily visited by both locals and visitors.
The trick to getting a good tour of the island is to get connected with a guide who really knows his Tongan history, and can provide a lot of accurate and interesting commentary during your tour. Maybe mention that specifically when you are inquiring about a tour.
As for tours in the other Tongan island groups, checking with the operators of wherever you are staying is generally a pretty good way to connect with a worthwhile tour.
