Winter Clothes for -0 degree

I will be on group tour Seoul+Jeju Island & will be visiting the following places during 1st week of Jan 09;

1. Daejanggeum Theme Park

2. Yongduam Rock (Dragon Head Rock)

3. Seongsan Sunrise Peak

4. Rape Seed Flower Farm

5. Teddy Bear Museum

6. Mysterious Road

7. Everland

8. Mount Sorak National Park

9. Dongdaemun Market

10. Lotte World Adventure Park

11. Gyeongbok Palace

12. Presidential Blue House

13. Insa-Dong

14. Shinchon Fashion Street

Can pls advise me the appropriate winter clothings I would need? The salesperson insist that I should get the following stuffs;

1. "100% wool thermals"

2. "80% down feather winter jackets"

3. "100% thermal socks"

4. "winter boots/shoes"

5. Leather gloves

As it is quite costly to purchase the above items, I wish to only get the necessary ones. And also i am afraid I might be over-equipped that I might "sweat" during winter.

Pls advise. Thank You.

Holidays81, I feel you pain as you live in Singapore, it won't be easy for you to get winter clothes there if not very expensive. But 1st week of Jan is very cold in Korea. It won't be much fun if you are sick with cold while you are traveling. If you traveling mostly by bus, be prepare for big temp difference between heated bus and bitter cold outdoors. It's better for you to dress in layers so you can peel off clothes when you are in indoors.

Here is my tip for money saving

1. Pantyhose is great substitute for longjohn. You may also pack gym clothes such as leggings, and tight fitting cotton shirts (though they are not as effective as woolen thermals).

2. If down feather jacket is too expensive, get padded jacket or ski jacket. They are lighter than woolen coats but keeps you pretty warm. Check out some winter jackets at http://www.llbean.com

*If you get jacket with hood that's better option so you won't have to buy hat separately. About 80% body heat escapes through head.

3. Fleece or cashmere scarves, hat and gloves are lightweight and warm. no need for leather gloves. I would also get good quality cashmere cardigan sweater so you can take off once you are indoor.

4. AS per shoes, as I replied to your earlier post, don't try to cut corner in this department.

Enjoy snowfighting!

Hi, Nos 1,2, 4,7,8,9,11,12,13 and 14 are outdoor so you really need to keep yourself warm with winter jackets and thermal wear. Places 2 and 3 in jeju Island are by the ocean and is very windy. Everland is an outdoor themepark whereas Lotte is half outdoor and half indoor - you will probably be very sweaty after all the rides and it's cumbersome to wear so many layers. Places No. 9, 13, 14 are shopping streets. Places No 12 is a 10 minute stop for photos as it's a security area, Place No. 6 is another 10 min stop for an "experience".

We wore 100% thermal long sleeve vest inside, followed by a long sleeve 100% wool jumper, top up with a winter jacket to stop the wind and chills creeping through your skin!. Next we warm up with scarf, gloves and a beannie. For us, it's good enough as we come from a 4 season country. You might want to do more. Hope this helps.

Cotton thermals are good to have. I agree with the pantyhose idea. Layer your clothing, start with a thin cotton shirt that tucks well into your pants and does not allow drafts. Maybe two thin cotton shirts and then a cotton thermal shirt over them, or a thick pullover or a sweater. It's important to cover your head and ears, and layer your clothing. . A hooded jacket and ear muffs works well. You can sometimes take off the hood and still have your ears protected. Definitley some wool gloves.

Leather or synthetic, it's up to you. It depends on what you like and how much you want to spend. You don't NEED leather.
