Beijing or Shanghai? I can only visit 1...

I have the opportunity to tag a weekend on to a business trip in September and was wondering which of this cities I should visit.

So, a little about me and my travel personality so you can give me some feedback:

- I like to sightsee and check out famous iconic places around the world

- I am interested in history but also love to see modern cities and skyscrapers

- I am a "fortune favors the bold" kind of guy who isn't overly concerned or cautious

- I love good food and memorable meals but I'm not much on fine dining

- I like a good view from somewhere up high

Mostly I just want to know what places look like and feel like.

Thanks for sharing!

-

Your first point should give you your own answer easily. There arn't many more famous and iconic places like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall.

For seeing once in a lifetime stuff I would vote for Beijing. Forbidden city, great wall of China, Tienanmen square, summer palace, temple of heaven. I mean you need more than two days there but if that is all you have I still think it would be very memorable. Shanghai is alright but its more of a business city. There are some things to see there and its more modern than Beijing, but when it comes to iconic places its not going to hold a candle to Beijing. Plan your time carefully to maximize the amount you can see.

Shanghai is just over a century and a half old. Beijing has a much longer history. Not even close. Beijing.

The only plus thing for Shanghai in relation to your list is high buildings.

Beijing is basically a must, if you have to pick a place.

Wow, glad I asked. You guys turned me around! I was leaning toward Shanghai because it just looks amazing with that skyline. But I don't know much about China actually and I don't know if I will ever be back so yes, Beijing it will be. Thanks guys.

If you can only do one, definitely Beijing. Beijing has all the history including the Great Wall, forbidden city, and temple of heaven sites. Lots and lots to,do and see.

Shanghai is a great, modern city. Lots of good food. Lots of shopping. It has the ultra modern, ultra tall skyscrapers. The bund riverfront has some neat Art Deco style buildings. But it doesn’t have the same history that Beijing does so, while we liked both, if you have time for only one it’s an easy choice, Beijing.

"But I don't know much about China actually and I don't know if I will ever be back so yes, " - If you can, do yourself a favor and read up on china and the history and plan carefully. Having even a basic background about China will significant increase your enjoyment and make your trip much more rewarding.
