The cheapest way to fly (trust me, we've investigated this many times) would be: Singapore -- Guangzhou on Tiger Airways (http://www.tigerairways.com.sg) and then Guangzhou -- Shanghai on Spring Airlines (http://www.china-sss.com). Barring any special deals on China Eastern or Singapore Airlines which might bring the cost of a simple round-trip to around 400-500 SGD, that is. Both Tiger Airways and Spring Airlines are budget airlines. The latter is great, unfortunately the website is Chinese-only and you need a Chinese bank card with e-banking enabled to pay.
