Age old question.....spending money!

I know this is asked so much, but I will ask it again as I really want to budget effectively!

We will be in Bali for 9 days, accommodation is paid for. We need to budget for:

- lunch in an inexpensive restaurant (burgers, chips, local food....no need to spend heaps but will avoid street food)

- evening meals (happy with local food, inexpensive to moderate restaurants, nothing fancy, just nice and chilled places)

- drinks....average drinkers, few beers, few cocktails, couple of glasses of local wine etc....maybe that’s a bit more than average! Lol

- excursions, particularly snorkelling, visiting temples, monkey forest etc.

How much would you budget a day? Most people have recommended around £100 per person which was more than I was expecting but if that is realistic then I’ll go with that.....as I said accommodation is paid.

Many thanks!

Lee

Hi Lee - the 100 a day figure regularly quoted on this forum in answer to this age old question is in Australian dollars. In pounds that's roughly £55. You would probably find about £35 per person per day to be a good baseline figure for food and drinks (cocktails and wine are UK prices generally). Then budget about £35 for a one day tour. If you want massages and shopping then take a bit more.

It won't be 100 quid a day per person, more like 60 for two people.

Hi Leescotrob,

How many are "we"

firstly need to know EXACTLY where you are staying and your exact overall Bali itinerary. EXACTLY will also mean Hotel as location may be very important as to what is nearby.

This will determine what is nearby (or not) and have a large impact on your budget.

Your other posts have mentioned things like Ubud, Lembongan and snorkeling at Manta Point. All could be/will be expensive "add ons".

Need to know full itinerary to be able to give an indication of costs of transfers/trips/fastboats/excurisons etc

EATING/DRINKING

Named Spirits and ordinary wine is expensive in Bali.

Kuta cheapest for named spirits with Captain Morgans/Gordon/Smirnoff generally starting from around IDR60k ~ just over 3quid

Go to Seminyak and expect starting prices to be around IDR85k ~ close to a fiver

Wine similarly expensive. Local wine can start at IDR60k-85k a glass. Ordinary Australian Wine IDR100k a glass

Then the possibility of up to 21% tax on the bill

Cocktails made with local Arak can taste like you're drinking Kerosene (don't ask how I know)

Many non-pretentious places in Kuta and Sanur you can get small beers for IDR25k, Large IDR40k, Mie Goreng for IDR40k and decent Grill fish and other stuff for IDR85k. Poppies 1&2 popular place as full of small bars/warungs serving cheap eats mixture of western/Indonesian food.

Then some places add up to 21% Service & Govt Tax.

As an example we eat a lot down Poppies Lanes in Kuta. On Poppies 2 Tubes - Grill Fish kebab around IDR90k, Apple Crumble IDR40k. Captain Morgans Spiced IDR60k, Beers standard IDR25-40k. No tax.

At the SKyGarden Night club in Kuta they do an all you can eat buffet 5-9pm for IDR99k+tax

https://skygardenbali.com/promo/

Last month at the bars near Skygarden saw Captain Morgans Spiced on promo for IDR50k

Go to Seminyak and pay IDR80k starting price for named spirit. Expect similar food/drimks in Similar surrounding to cost 50% more and more likely that Govt/service tax is added.

SNORKELING

If staying on Lembongan then group snorkeling trips to Manta Bay are only IDR200k per person ~ 11quid

Do the same trip as a daytrip from the mainland then IDR700k+

Newbrosurfing can arrange either as group or private tours

SNORKELING OPTIONS - PRIVATE DRIVER

If you are staying on Bali mainland in Ubud or "down south" the nearest place for half decent snorkeling is Padangbai Blu Lagoon.

Dive centres in Sanur Charge $55 per person just to do 2 hours snorkeling in Padangbai.

Easier cheap alternative You can easily do the snorkeling trip yourself. e.g. you hire the Private Driver for the day (IDR600k) and drive up to Padangbai/Blu Lagoon. Hire some snorkeling stuff off the guys on the beach or from any of the dive centres. Then when finished/bored simply go off and do some Sightseeing.

EXCURSIONS

As we don't know where you are staying not easy to give a budget. e.g. If you are already staying in Ubud you can just wander down to the Monkey Forest, pay your IDR50k like everybody else and wander around.

PRIVATE DRIVER

You can hire a private Driver for IDR600k ~ 33quid for the day (9am to 6/7pm ish). That is for the whole van to yourself not per Person. You can set your own daily itinerary if you wish. Stop where you want, when you want, eat where and when you want. No fixed "time" itinerary.

Drivers often have itinerary suggestions.

The driver will wait for you at each site.

People also use private Drivers for Transfers between destinations so if you are moving around you can use the transfer to do a bit of sightseeing without designating a specific day.

You can pretty much get by on 50 - 80 pounds a day for a couple of people. Bring an ATM card or credit card just in case.

Thank you so much! In answer to NotAPigsty:

- staying at The Acala on Nusa Lembongan for 3 nights

- weekend in Canguu, this will be a villa organised by a friend living in Singapore, no more details on that just yet

- staying at Pramana Watu Kurung Resort in Ubud for the last three days

So,we are a couple, plus 1 friend that is joining us for the Bali trip.

In esssence, £50 per person for the day, adding more for day trips should we book any?

We went to Nusa Lembongon last October for the day from Bali.

We booked our snorkeling trip with Newbrosurfing. The owner himself didn't take us on the 4 stop snorkeling trip but had his "Uncle" Wayan take us in his new boat called Snoopy. He speaks good English and is very experienced and I highly recommend him. Wayan himself has a small "office" on the beach when you arrive. It's called "Snoopy" tours. The owner of Newbrosurfing took care of our booking through Rocky Fast Cruises as we could get a 15% discount by doing that.

Good luck
