Transtar Travel - Solitaire Bus from SG to KL

*** I would give ZERO stars if I could. Disgusting interiors and terrible customer service from the company. This is a review of my own experience in order to help other travelers make a choice on buses from SG to KL and back. ***

We selected the SOLITAIRE bus from SG to KL, swayed by some positive online reviews and pictures of the amazing lush interiors.

We could not have been more wrong with our choice.

The bus interior, despite some glowing online reviews and pictures, was disgusting. Some seats could not adjust the tilt or elevation. Some of chairs even have the "massage" feature broken. Some screens can't be used. It's a good thing that the bus was so empty that we could change our seats as we pleased. But yet, all the seats were severely lacking in decent maintenance and were filthy and disgusting; we had to brush out the dirt and gunk like peanut shells, and even had to wipe down the seats, armrests, controls, and screens with a wet wipe. Paint, plastic, and even the faux leather were chipping or cracked. There is a cubby hole meant for your bags, but it's filled with used tissue papers and garbage from another time. Probably from last year. The windows were smeared with the greasy Brylcreem of some old uncle, and the curtains had a rancid smell.

Nonetheless, seeing that we were duped and had no other recourse, we braved on from Singapore (at the Golden Mile Complex office) heading towards KL. Everything seemed okay passing the Singapore/Malaysian checkpoint, and once into Johor, we stopped by a gas station to pick up two service staff and our lunch meal.

The service staff were very nice, served us our drinks and lunch which consisted of Nasi Lemak from Killiney Kopitiam. Unfortunately, instead of some basic Nasi Lemak we would hope to at least get, this Nasi Lemak was far from our expectations. It was served with some lackluster Lemak rice, some anchovies and peanuts, a meager amount of sambal balacan, and... chicken nuggets.

Reaching KL was okay. The return trip wasn't much better, just that their office had a waiting area and provided air conditioning, coffee, and tea. Otherwise, the bus interior wasn't any better. Food back was a lunchbox of some chicken rice dish that tasted very weird.

Then the horror started. We went past Malaysian customs without a hitch, but going through Singapore customs took an excruciatingly long time. And when we finally got out of the immigration area, we were shockingly dumbfounded to witness the bus reverse out of the bus bay, and then proceeded to leave without us. It was too far away for us to do anything to stop it.

I called Transtar Travel immediately and requested for help, or what I should do. Lady on the line put me on hold for a solid 12 minutes, and when she got back to me, she just asked me to take a taxi back. I asked her if the company was going to reimburse me for the cost, she said no. I then asked her if I should engage my lawyer, then she quickly said "wait ah" and put me on hold for another 5 minutes, and then told me to take the next bus that was on the way. I asked her what time does the bus reach the immigration, she said in about 2 more hours. Which if you add on another hour's wait at the immigration area, that means 3 more hours before we can leave the immigration checkpoint!

We gave up. We had to pay another $2.50/pax (total $5) to take a bus to Jurong East, then from there another $30 for a cab just to get home.

If you're really on a tight budget, and really MUST take this bus, just go last minute and purchase a ticket from the office, and it'll save you 15 or more dollars. Just don't expect the beautiful pictures you see online, and expect to possibly get left behind at the customs. For us, we will never ever take Transtar Travel again!

I have limited knowledge about classy fine cuisine , 5* hotels , SIA First Class , but i do know about cheap buses..

Don't take trains so know nothing about them as well..

Occasionally i understand why some regular posters gets ilusioned & stops posting in the forums that they try to contribute..

Not only in Singapore forum but also others in the region..

It's probably because of posters like u...

Back some time ago , i stopped posting for a while until i see more unknowing international travellers stranded by busea from 707 , Delima , Pacific Express(closed) , etc ...

I try my best to give alternative modes of transport .. still don't understand why i'm the Transtar Bus company owner or employee???

Cheers

Hello Scooby,

I can see that u side with Transtar a lot from your comment. Please do not just know how to post positive feedback for them. As customers, we have the right to review, comment and feedback on their services so that they will improve.

For your info, we book package tour $1000 plus per person with hotel rooms from TRANSTAR and this is not the first time we travel with them to KL. Previously, they did provide hotel transfer but not this time cos they do not have hotel approval to park there now. I see many other tour agencies like Five Star etc pick up their tourists at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel which we stayed in.

I understand from your view point, bus breakdown is very common thing to you but do you understand the agony when you are with 2 young kids and 2 elderly with leg problems when bus break down and it is raining heavily ???

If bus breakdown is so common according to you, then those bus companies that you mentioned should do something about it and find a solution to fix it and not let us bear the problems and consequences !!!

For your information, we even need to take 2 cabs with 5 heavy lugguages with 2 kids and elderly just to go to their head office to take their SO CALLED FIRST CLASS SOLITAIRE BUS. And after only 5 min of driving, it break down on the bridge. For your info when we sit their bus, their wireless wifi and tablet screen are not working as well. There are mouldy stains on the seats and food stains left down by previous people on the seats as well. Front windscreen also cracked and did not send for repair. Their maintenance is SO POOR for their so called FIRST CLASS SOLITAIRE BUS.

I understand from your comment that you have a lot of knowledge and experience with Express Bus Services from many companies. But I am not interested so please do not bother to reply under my review and comment.

For me, I don't take express bus services when I need to travel with 2 kids and 2 elderly. We always book package tour for convenience and safety purposes for our family. We always book hotels with at least 4 stars to 5 stars with the travel agency together with the transport included. So, I will expect them to provide us with good services. I hope you understand this point. Thanks.

Hi Valerie ,

I wasn't replying to you in my latter comments but to the Poster who accused me of being the owner or employee of Transtar ..

Anyway it does not matter to me..

This is an open forum..

U can try to get Tripadvisor to remove my comments if you don't like them..

I'm also not interested in giving u anymore suggestions..

Also not interested what u think about me or your expensive tours..

Good Day

Avoid TranStar. I had the priveledge of taking their Solitaire bus from KL to Singapore. What was promoted on their website & what actually happens are completely different. The bus is old, dirty & nothing works properly.

The bus hostess/staff was very sweet & was constantly apologizing for the broken items - massager, TV. WiFi, even for the bus driver who decided he could smoke on a non smoking bus.

If this is one of their best, it’s time for a new company to roll in!

Recently used this service from KL to Singapore. Coach is certainly not as new as pics would have you believe but still a comfortable journey. Beware however if you join at 1 Utama it simply adds an hour to your journey. Also, overall it took over 7 hours end to end and had we known that we would have flown.
