Couple of questions....

Hello

We are staying at Hotel Royal @ Queens over New years. Could you tell me please where New years eve would be celebrated around here, fireworks etc?

A friend went to Little India markets and bought some lovely hangings etc I don't recall seeing actual markets there last few times Iv'e been. She said at the entrance.

Can anyone explain where exactly these markets are please?

Hi,

NYE celebrations will be at Marina Bay. There will be concerts (ticketed) at the Floating Platform, Esplanade outdoor theatre (free) and fireworks at the Bay. It will be very crowded and you have to come early to secure a spot around the promenade.

When was your friend here? If it was around this period then it might be because of Deepavali (Festival of Lights). There is a bazaar happening now and the street light up at Little India for the coming Deepavali which will be on Wednesday, 18 October 2017. The bazaar lasts until eve of Deepavali.

Outside of Deepavali season, you can try the shops along Serangoon Road and the Little India Arcade. Depending on your luck, you may find they stock the hangings that your friend bought.

Hi

Regarding the markets, she might mean the Deepavali market in Farrer Park, which is running at the moment, but will close after the festival. There's also Tekka Market, which is a wet market/food centre/shopping combo. Regardless, you'll find lots of interesting shopping in Little India.

More info about Tekka Market here: thebestsingapore.com/best-place/…

Yes, she was there last week. That explains it.

Shame, looks like I won’t find these lovely hangings.

So it might be very difficult getting back to hotel nye. Hmmmm.

Thank you both.

Not so. You can walk back to your hotel. Hotel Royal@Queens is not too far from the Bay. There will be many people walking too to wherever they are going. Hotel Royal is a bit further from Swissotel the Stamford.

Here's a street map so you can see it's location.

Arab Street has better textile shops than Little India IMO: streetdirectory.com/sg/…17065_1.html

It's relatively walkable from behind Little India Arcade, albeit the route is less interesting now with the Sungei Road Thieves Market (around Weld Road) & Victoria Street Wholesale Centre (beside Ban San Street bus terminal) both gone. The said shophouses begin from Golden Landmark mall/Village Hotel Bugis.

You can also take the train from Little India MRT to Bugis MRT, then walk 2 blocks eastwards to Arab Street.
