McDonalds Wifi - need wireless@sg account?

I have a question about the McDonalds free WiFi in SG.

Where I live in Australia the McDonalds free WiFi is an OPEN system, anyone can sit down outside a McDonalds and connect without any need for prior registration or food purchase or fee...

Is it the same in Singapore, or do I need to register a wireless@sg account to use it?

Do I need to pay at the cash register or is it free (or do I just buy a coffee)?

I do have a mobile, but it is a work one so was wary about taking it out there with me. I assumed I would just be able to use wi-fi hotspots like in the UK like in coffe shops you just register at the time and that's it, no need for a mobile number).

Most of the free wifi places like Starbuck require you to have the free wireless@sg account already. You can pop into a SingTel mobile phone store with your passport and be given a free wireless@sg account.

Dont you need to make any calls when your in Singapore? Get a cheap £10 Pay As You Go phone from CarphoneWarehouse, unlock it and buy a $10 local Sim in Singapore - much cheaper than using the hotel phone to ring back to the UK.

Well my plan was to use emails rather than call back home, to save money! Getting a phone, unlocking it then buying a sim card seems excessive to just send emails but I guess if that is the best way then that is what I will have to do!

Thanks for the advice :)

No, you can just get a Wireless@sg account by walking into a mobile phone store with identification (thats what SingTel said on their website) - no phone needed.
