Slovenia & Croatia (No Plitvice) or just Croatia

Saturday 3rd Sept London to… Ljubljana (Slovenia) (Fly or Train?)

Sunday 4th Ljubljana (2 nights at hotel)

Monday 5th Bled (day trip)

Tuesday 6th Ljubljana to Dubrovnik (3 nights)

Wednesday 7th Dubrovnik

Thursday 8th Dubrovnik

Friday 9th Fly Dubrovnik to London to NZ

Less jam packed - miss out on Zagreb but still get to see Slovenia.

Saturday September 3 London to… Zagreb (Train or Fly?)

Sunday 4th Zagreb

Monday 5th Plitvice

Tuesday 6th Zagreb to Dubrovnik

Wednesday 7th Dubrovnik

Thursday 8th Dubrovnik

Friday 9th Fly Dubrovnik to London to NZ

No Slovenia but more time for Zagreb and Dubrovnik.

I'm stuck between both options. I really want to see Plitvice but I also want to see a bit of Slovenia as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, you can do both but you have to be prepared to spend less time in the towns. This is my suggestion:

3rd Early morning flight to Ljubljana.

4th Lake Bled

5th Travel to Zagreb by train (less than 2 half hours by express train).

6th Plitvice

7th Zagreb to Dubrovnik (fly)

8th Dubrovnik

9th Fly Dubrovnik to London to NZ

To see and do the most in the towns, try using private guides instead of joining group tours.

Its more expensive but you get to choose the timings and can decide specifically what you want to do and see.

You could try and fit it all in but it will definitely be fast paced!

We did the following last year:

Flew London to Dubrovnik

3 nights Dubrovnik

1 night Mostar

1 night Trogir (via Split)

2 nights Plitvice (1 day in plitvice)

2 nights Ljubljana (via Skocjan caves - amazing!)

1 night Bled

Flew out from Ljubljana

We did all this with a rental car- public transport would be more time consuming. We also had to skip Zagreb and Istria region (sadly).

Happy to elaborate on more details if you want them.

Sorry I should have said that our fast paced itinerary worked for us but we had really researched what we wanted to do and knew what to expect. However it wouldn't suit others.

It's really up to you to work out what is essential to you and the pace that you'd enjoy.

Oh and definitely fly from London (not train, that'd take days!)

Thanks for the help. So this is what I have at the moment:

Saturday 3rd Early morning flight to Ljubljana.

Sunday 4th Explore Ljubljana (Potential private tour)

Monday 5th Lake Bled (Day trip - Tour). Night train to Zagreb (less than 2 half hours by express train)

Tuesday 6th Day trip to Plitvice (Day trip - Tour). Stay in Zagreb.

Wednesday 7th Morning flight from Zagreb to Dubrovnik (55 mins) - Relax

Thursday 8th Dubrovnik

Friday 9th Fly Dubrovnik to London to NZ

Any thoughts or room for improvement?

If you do it this way, you won't have time to explore Zagreb in the day light hours.

Perhaps you should do Lake Bled on the 4th.

If you want more time in Zagreb, then take the night train on the 4th to Zagreb.

If you need less time in Zagreb and a bit of extra time in Ljubljana, take a late morning train to Zagreb and you will have the afternoon for Zagreb.

Alternatively, you can take an afternoon flight to Dubrovnik, then you have one morning in Zagreb.

Thanks for that. I think now its just a matter of doing a little more research into both cities and choosing which one we'd like to spend a little more time exploring.

Hi. The day trip tours you mention to Bled and Plitvice - are those through an agency that you would recommend? Any options for a day hike? thanks.

If you come early in Ljubljana, you don`t need more than few hours to see it all. I would spend here only one night and then go to Bled the next day and Zagreb.

If you wish for a fast sightseeing and hopping around Croatia, you could stay one night in Plitvice and then go to Split or Šibenik (this could be an option) and from there to Dubrovnik. (By bus)

Where would you like to hike? In Zagreb? We have Medvednica mountain (1033 m Sljeme peak) with lots of marked trails (I go there at least 1-2 times a week to run if I`m not on the road) We have an old medieval city Medvedgrad, the mine Zrinski, mountain huts at the top and on the way, natural springs etc...
