What part of Cartagena to stay in

I still haven't reserved my hotel in Cartagena. I have heard that the beached near the city are not very nice. Are there areas or hotels near the city where the beaches are well maintained or should I forget about going to the beach there?

The beaches in Bocagrande are not that good and there are a lot of very aggressive people trying to sell stuff. I highly recommend that you consider staying in the Old City. There are many good hotels in all price ranges. There are also many good restaurants that are reasonably priced. The hotels in the Old City are within walking distance of the museums, many restaurants, old churches, and many shops.

We stayed in Getsemani at Posada La Fe and loved it. A nice area, great street food and restaurants all around and only a 10-15 min walk to the Old City. The beaches are not worth the effort.

The El Laguito beach area at the end of Bocagrande is a bit quieter and nicer than Bocagrande main.

On the other side of the walled city, is la Boquilla - a generally nicer beach, however further out away from the main areas. They do a lot of kite surfing here.

Baru Island is another option, although way out of the general area, however at least has a lovely beach (Playa Blanca) and some hotels / resorts. You could also head out to some of the other islands and stay there.

I usually stay in El Laguito but Castillo Grande also has a nicer, quieter beach.
