Ein gedi and masada

I have planned 2 nights at the ein gedi kibbutz - is this long enough to do the ein gedi reserve, Masada snake path and dip in the Dead Sea whilst also looking round the kibbutz grounds?

It's more than enough. You can easily do all three things that you mentioned in a single day, though spending a longer time will allow you to explore Masada and the Ein Gedi reserve in a more relaxed way.

After climbing the snake path I would allocate 3 hours to explore the site plus a visit to the Yigal Yadin Masada Museum.

Perfect since having a hotel room after being up from 4 a.m. or earlier, hiking and touring, will allow you to sleep a bit before continuing on to the next site. Whether that is a long visit to the Dead Sea or a leisurely hike at Ein Gedi. You will even be able to do do the long hike, if you are interested.

Most people hike up to the main waterfall and back (Nahal David). This is a circular route that takes about two hours. Along the way there are many small fresh water pools where you can go for a refreshing dip (swimming is not allowed at the main waterfall pool).

There is another hike in the park - Nahal Arugot.

You will get a brochure at the entrance showing all the hiking trails and explanations about the flora & fauna. There is also a small archaeological site there.

Here is more information:

and a link to the PDF version of the brochure:

There are plenty of options for hiking at the park that are suitable for anyone. The easiest trail is the lower David Stream (Nahal David to the large waterfall and back), but there are also more difficult trails that lead all the way up to the mountains and cliffs above, and more moderate options that takes to some more gems (my favorite is Dodim cave). You can also hike on the wet trail of the Arugot Stream. There is also the pretty mosaic of the ancient synagogue of Ein Gedi, as well as other great sites along the Dead Sea shores, like Qumran and Ein Feshkha. You can also spend a day at one of the hotels' spas, If that's your thing.
