Sand Flies

We are visiting late August for 17 days, our 1st time. We will do the usual tourist sights and cities including a beach stay at Phan Thiet or near Hoi An most likely. I read about sand flies on the beach. Is this is a big issue for beach goers or are they confined to a particular area or season?. If yes, what is the best protection against getting bitten.

A good insect repellent is the best protection ,apart from covering up. But I didn't notice any when I was in that area.

The mosquitos were thick after sunset but I forget what month is was.

There are sand flies on most tropical beaches. Although there is no particular time of the year, they are most prevalent in the early morning and late afternoon.

There are a number of ways to protect oneself against sand flies. Besides mosquito repellent or mosquito cream, they don't like coconut oil and they don't bite people who eat a lot of garlic, or use garlic oil. Unlike the sand flies in Africa and South America, those in Southeast Asia don't usually transmit disease. However, some people are allergic to them and develop large welts that may last for months.

There are not a lot of mosquitoes in Mui Ne, particularly between November and April when it's dry and windy. However, there are more in the rainy season between May and October, particularly on Rang Beach in Ham Tien.
