1 week in Takayama, Shirakawa, Kanazawa, Gero & Matsumoto?

Hi everyone,

We are a family of 3 and will fly directly to Nagoya from Singapore for this trip in Oct, from 11th or 12th to 20th.

My question has to do with sequencing these places for the 9-10 days that we have.

I have learnt that it's faster if we were to take the JR train to Takayama and I know that it's relatively easy to travel from Takayama to Shirakawa.

Should I slot in Gero while staying in Takayama or visit Gero first?

It seems that Kanazawa is quite far from Matsumoto (Nagano), should I make Matsumoto my last destination (prior to returning to Nagoya for my flight back to Singapore) then?

Will all these be too much for the 9 days that we have?

I have travelled to different parts of Japan quite a number of times and every time, I ended up doing too much for the time I had, ha ha! It can be exhausting, so please advise! Ha ha ha!

Thank you,

Victoria

P.S. There's no harm stopping over Nagoya or better still Kobe for some tasty beef on my way back, isn't it? :-)

I passed thru Nagoya so many times on the way back to Tokyo... Should i stay over for a night just to look around?

Day 1: Nagoya

(Day 2: Gero Onsen:

Because Gero exists south of Takayama, if you wants go there, go before Takayama.)

Day 3: Takayama:

Day 4: Shin-hotaka Onsen:

It's good to take Shin-hotaka Ropeway on Day 4 or 5.

Day 5, 6: Kanazawa via Shirakawago.

Day 7: Shibu Onsen; visit the Snow Monkey Park

Day 8: Matsumoto or Kiso Valley.

I think it's good to cut Gero Onsen and go to Shin-hotaka Onsen and Kiso-Valley.

Day 6: Fly back from Nagoya.

Consider this Nagoya > Gero onsen (1n) > Takayama (1n) > Shirakawa-go for few hours > Kanazawa (2n) by Nohi bus > Nagano or Matsumoto (1n) > Nagoya (2n)

However, it'd be a pity if you're skipping the Alpine route, Kamikochi, Shin-hotaka in northern JP Alps. Your timeline happens to be peak koyo (fall foliage) for those.

my last crossing of the Alpine route in mid-Oct 2010.

3. Re: 1 week in Takayama, Shirakawa, Kanazawa, Gero & Matsumoto?

Thank you both for super fast respoonses, I really appreciate it!

I originally planned for Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine but was told that it would be closed or too cold...

Coming back to this Takayama trip, would I be able to slot in the ALPINE ROUTE you suggested if I forego staying 1-2 nights at Nagoya?

I have just read online that it's easy to go from Osaka to Kanazawa. As I have yet to buy the air tickets, should I switch to starting my trip from Osaka?

Best,

Victoria

>>would I be able to slot in the ALPINE ROUTE you suggested if I forego staying 1-2 nights at Nagoya?

no need to forego Nagoya given 10 nights in your itin. Consider this if you want to include the Alpine route -

Kanazawa > Tateyama via Toyama to start crossing > stay overnight in Midagahara or Murodo along the Alpine route (1n) > continue onto Nagano or Matsumoto

use hyperdia.com to check train schedules, fares.

refer to the official website in #2 which contains plenty of info for planning, including weather, clothing, scheduling, transports, trails, baggage etc. If you intend to cross, avoid weekends and public holidays as there'll be long lines for cable cars and ropeway.

Mid-Oct is prime time for peak koyo - it cannot be too cold unless you can't bear day temps around low to mid-teens. It'd indeed be cold in Nov when first snow would accumulate in Murodo @2400m.

>>I have just read online that it's easy to go from Osaka to Kanazawa.

Kanazawa can also be accessed from Tokyo in 2.5 hours direct by Hokuriku Shinkansen. However, re the itin suggested by Mabei-sensei in #1 and mine, just stick with Nagoya.

refer to Japan guide for more travel info on Nagoya.

5. Re: 1 week in Takayama, Shirakawa, Kanazawa, Gero & Matsumoto?

Mabei-sensei, I am sorry I must have confused you - in the caption, I indicated one week BUT I actually have about 10 days all in for this itinerary.

Now that I have 10 days (starting from Nagoya on 11 Oct),

- would you still recommend skipping Gero onsen?

- should I stay one night at Shirakawa?

- will it be better if I were to go from Nagoya to Kanazawa FIRST?

in addition, I would like to use the Takayama 5-day pass? How do I optimize the use of this card by tweaking the itinerary?

Thank you very much for further advice.

Best regards,

Victoria

Hi, I traveled from Nagoya to Takayama (stayed 2 nights and did a day trip to Shirakawago), then to Toyama (stayed one night), did the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route to reach Shinano-Omachi (stayed one night), and then traveled back to Nagoya. I used the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass. You can read up more on my recent trip at ajotterbook.blogspot.sg. Hope this is of some help and wish you a pleasant trip!

Thank you, Jotter B!

In Oct, will we be able to see the snow wall at Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine? There are months when the wall is not "ready", I have heard.

Best regards,

Victoria

Hi, you may want to find out more about the different seasonal attractions at www.alpen-route.com/en/. According to this website, it would be autumn in Oct, and I doubt there would be snow. Hope this is of some help!

Hi, JotterB

I read your blog and also did further research on Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine. I think there won't be any snow wall in Oct. This could also be the reason why the 2 experts above advised that I visit Kamikochi etc instead. There, I will be able to see the Autumn leaves at their best, it seems?

P.S. love your blog posts, keep writing 😄

Hi Victoria,

I'm going to Japan mid-Nov and have decided to fly in to Osaka instead of Nagoya. Osaka seems more fun compared to Nagoya. You can consider buying the 5-day Takayama-Hokuriku Area pass which covers those areas that you are going. The pass is available for sale at JTB Singapore. I'll be staying 2 nights in Takayama and travelling to Shirakawago and Shin-hotaka from Takayama.
