We recently arrived at the airport on our first visit to West Malaysia and took a cab to the beach at Teluk Chempedak where our hotel was located. The taxi driver quoted a modest 50 MYR when we spoke to him initially but altered the pricing to MYR 450 when we arrived there citing a lack of passengers. I didn't want to argue further and just paid up. This is ridiculous and frustrating. We loved everything about Kuantan but not the prices we were being quoted whenever we needed to head somewhere. Aren't taxis regulated by enforcement divisions, or are they bribing the corrupt officers to get what they want?
