Eastern Sabah Itinerary - 10 full day- How long is too long?

Hello,

I'm currently finalising a solo trip to eastern Sabah. I'm a first timer and novice jungle trekker/animal enthusiast. Very much a new experience. Key aims are to see some animals and immerse myself in a jungle.

I'm not sure however how long to stay in Danum as I will have already done quite a bit before I arrive and wonder if KK is worth some time.

My current itinerary is as follows:

Day 1 - Land in Sandakan PM; transfer to Sepilok Edge Resort

Day 2 - Visit rehabilitation centres. Stay at Resort

Day 3 - As above. Stay at Resort

Day 4 - Travel to Kinabatangan River. Home Stay (3rd)

Day 5 - Tours on river. Home Stay

Day 6 - Transfer to Lahad Datu/ Spend night in city [due to bus timings] (5th)

Day 7 - Transfer to Danum Valley Studies Centre. Stay centre. (6th)

Day 8 - Tours. Stay at centre (7th)

Day 9 - Tours - Stay at centre (8th)

OPTION 1:

Day 10 - Transfer to KK Stay hotel. (Total 3N2D Danum Valley) (9th)

Day 11 - KK. Hotel (10th)

Day 12 - KK. Hotel (11th)

Day 13 - International Flight (12th)

OPTION 2:

Day 10- Stay Centre

Day 11 - Stay Centre (Total: Danum Valley 5N4D)

Day 12 - Transfer to KK. Airport Hotel PM [really just a transit stay]

Day 13 - International Flight

Welcome any advice on the two options!

Well, if wildlife is the aim of the trip, then stay at Danum for 4 nights for sure ! - the only wildlife in Kota Kinabalu is at TARP Islands, Gaya Island for example has some nice wildlife / good snorkelling, but its quite expensive to stay there.

You will enjoy some trips to the TARP islands if staying in KK, but i would choose Danum all day long over KK.

Claire A,

Sorry for the late reply hope it is of some use now.

I like all of your prospective plans, you have put a lot of planning time/ thought into them.

Signprint is correct.

Except there is no big wildlife in the KK marine park unlike the East coast reserves.(mostly underwater viewing reefs etc.)

As mentioned Pulau Gaya has smaller wildlife. Hairy pig being the largest.

But has other points of attraction, swimmimg, boarding, beach etc.

You are going to the Danum valley?

will you be this way again soon?

Then stay as long as possible.

"First timer animal enthusiast"

Danum valley is where you must go.

Suck up the culture, the language the tracking skills, reading the weather and avoiding the slippery bits while trying to stay upright.

Danum Valley a forever memory, now we have superb cameras to record/watch it all again.

Have a look at the voluntary projects in Sabah as these may interest you rather than a expensive holiday locations.

Do not rush to visit KK over remote parts of Sabah.

You can be in a city anywhere.

Only a few visit the remote parts of Sabah/Sarawak.

Good luck and enjoy your Sabah time.
