Alternatives to Sipadan on east coast

Hello.I unfortunately will have limited time in borneo (next march)..my only sure stop is tip of borneo. I m.also considering Mulu to spend at least 1 -2 days on trekking/caving.I understand I d have to fly there. I don t want to leave borneo without seeing the clear waters and marine life of the east coast, but many dive centers catering to mabul/sipadan are expensive and require at least 4-5 days stay or more. Is there an alternate place/solution that would allow me to get a glimpse of this beautiful area, especially underwater diving and/or snorkeling? Any daytrips to these areas? Or offshore places to stay/explore for a couple days? Thanks in advance :-)

Yes, some of the agents based in Semporna offer day trips / boat / snorkelling trips around the islands, such as ;

sipadanborneo.com, Scuba Junkie or pulaumabul.com for example.

I don't think you will - its protected and only a handful (120) permits per day to dive there, mostly you need to stay on one of the nearby islands to dive there, plus its over an hour each way. So day trips are discouraged as permits are given out by tourist board to accommodation providers.

There is a list online somewhere, but all the dive providers with permits have accommodations, some are budget, like Uncle Chans, Billabong backpackers lodge.

As far as i am aware you can't just rock up and dive from Semporna to Sipadan, but if you have 3 days you could check out the packages from some of the budget providers.
