Anywhere can I find the portable WiFi router in Kuching?

Hi,

We'll go to Kuching in Mid of July. Do anyone know whether I can find portable wifi router for rent in Kuching so that I can gain access to internet everwhere. If yes, how much per day or package?

Besides, how to go to the Fairy Caves from Ariva Gateway? How long to go? Can I enought time to go if I start in afternoon? Is Fairy Caves near the Wind Caves or not?

Hi,

if remembering Fairy Caves and Wind Caves are just 15 minutes apart road journey.

From Ariva Gateway..that I had to google, it showed it will take close to 50minutes from city.

Then I went to Sarawak Foresty website,it shows Wind Caves operate only until 4:30pm...and since mid July is still the fasting month, they might close earlier.

Both these caves are close to Bau town.

One tip- bring your torch lights and fresh batteries, and really comfortable walking shoes with good grip..quite a flight of stairs which can be slippery too.

Are you planning to self drive? To reach,as mentioned is to approach Bau town, then I just whatsapp my friend in Kuching as she took me there ...once in Bau town, is to look for sign..saying Gua Kapur(I think it is spelt Kapor instead),then to know you are on right track,is to see sign Tasik Biru.

For both, better you start early in the day, so you have the time and pace in the cave to explore..otherwise it is just a rush and you do not get to enjoy the cave sights .

Now on the portable wifi router..handy has not made presence in Malaysia as yet.

Think the best,is to get a prepaid Malaysia SIM for your smartphone..and there are data package which you can subscribe to.

Larger shops that sell phone cards will have these. Also in the shopping malls look for the phone kiosks. Phone shops are about as ubiquitous as food courts.

I bought one from a shop down Jln Padugan from Batik Boutique hotel. Near the cat statue. I never used it!

I have a Digi Prepaid Broadband Starter Pack, costs RM 100, but other stores sold these for more. Its a USB dongle that plugs into your laptop. I believe its a month of broadband and reloadable.

If you have a smartphone, you can easily get a Malaysian sim card (bring your passport), then buy say, RM 60 ringgit load and use data. I use Maxis Hotlink, works well even out to Damai. The phone plans are not easy to understand, best have the seller show you, or just turn on data and use the load. If you are only staying a week it wont cost much.

Mkiara & Jambo,

Thanks for your advice. I will not drive. I've planned to go all the points by public transportation. So I want to know # of bus & where can I get the bus? I am planning to go to Fairy Cave after I check-out from Damai Beach that morning(I'll stay overnight in Damai Beach Resort). So, I think around noon when I arrive Ariva from Damai. According to your explanation, I think that I might not enough time to go to Fairy Cave. Unless I go there direct from Damai, Is this possible? If yes, how to go? Anyway, thanks both of you so much.

Hi,

I think it is not convenient to use public transport e.g bus to Fairy Cave.

I have just WhatsApp again my Kuching friend..and confirmed, even you take the bus from the KUching Sentral (Jalan Penrissen) ,she is also not sure if there is direct bus to Fairy Cave,or near to Fairy Cave or requiring you to change to another bus in Bau town, and asking to alight somewhere close to Fairy Cave and may require you walking a distance to reach the cave entrance.

From Damai Beach Resort which is in Santubong into city ,say your Ariva, will also take 40-50minutes

Basically to reach Bau(Fairy Cave), from Santubong, there are two routes, and the more safer one goes thru the city.

And I think for your safety, why not you consider arranging either chartering a taxi or joining a tour to Fairy Cave/Wind Cave immediately after you have checked into Ariva.

I still remembered when I was in Kuching, West Kalimantan(Indonesia) is just across..as I did take a short flight to Pontianak, and a local there drove us to Singkawang and was telling us we are close to the border line.

Generally, the bus services in Kuching arent very reliable. You could grab a bus from Kuching Sentral (the pick- up and drop- off point for most buses that ply between the towns in Sarawak ) but it would probably drop you in. Bau , the nearest town to the caves. However , you might need to take separate transport to the caves.. I would suggest arranging a taxi or car for the day as it would save time and you could be more mobile to explore further afield.

Infact, as far as caves go, i wouldn't bother with either the Fairy or Wind caves- you would have a better experience visiting Niah or the Mulu showcaves which are certified UNESCO heritage sites. ( but you do need more time for these as Mulu caves requires flying, whereas Niah is situated in the interiors so do need you to travel from another town)

If you are going to Damai, I would suggest just relaxing there or take a hike up Mt Santubong. It is the durian season and Pasir Pandan ( which is on the way to Damai ) is renowned for their wild crafted durians that drop from 100-200 year old durian trees. That is , if you are fond of durians! Or drop by Buntal, a sleepy fishing village enroute to Damai, which has several seafood restaurants for a reasonable but fresh seafood lunch or dinner?

Another alternative is to take a boat out from Camp Permai ( next to Damai ) to see the pink Irrawady dolphins.

Moreover, Ariva Gateway is in town and to make the trip all the way to the caves would not be worth your while. If you are in Kuching over the weekend, it might be worth spending your time at the Sunday Market on Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings as July is the fruit season and you will get to see a variety of the jungle produce brought in by the natives.

Have a good trip!
