Day Trip to Mt Fuji, Lake Ashi & Hakone - On our own

HI!

Is it possible to do a day trip from Tokyo to Mt Fuji, Lake Ashi & Hakone on our own? Planning to visit next year Feb 2017.

1) Suggestions on trains or bullet train from Tokyo to Mt Fuji

2) Any public buses or transportation to the 5th Station on Mt Fuji?

3) Boat ride on Lake Ashi

4) Transportation up to the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway

5) Any other suggestions on sights and best place for good food is much appreciated.

Include the cost would be beneficial for my planning.

Thank you so much!

It would be quite a rush to visit both in 1 day. Consider staying overnight in Hakone onsen ryokan.

1. Fuji 5-lake is not served by Shinkansen.

2. the road to the 5th station @2300m would be covered in deep snow in Feb and closed ! Anyway, Mt Fuji is better viewed from a distance AND if the weather permits.

check out japan guide or Hakone website for more info.

Hi DLi_hk,

I can't decide whether I should stay at fujigoko or make it a day trip from Tokyo. How much time do you suggest to explore and enjoy the fuji five lakes area? Which one is best for autumn colors? And what is the difference between retro bus and omnibus in …fujikyu.co.jp/heritage-tour/detail/id/1/…

out of the 5 lakes if you visit Kawaguchi-ko or Yamanaka-ko only, a day trip from Tokyo might be fine to cover the koyo spots along the lake rim (if bus schedules allow).

2016 Mt Fuji fall foliage festival in Kawaguchi-ko (from 1st to 23rd Nov)

www.fujisan.ne.jp/event/info.php…

If time permits and if you want to cover all 5 lakes, then staying overnight would be more relaxed and enjoyable.

It happens that I'll visit Fuji 5-lake for peak autumn foliage in mid Nov. have rented a car (for 4 ppl) for 2 days only to visit all the koyo spots and stay for 2 nights in an onsen hotel overlooking Mt Fuji. Hope the weather will be kind to us. In my previous visits (not in koyo season), I took the retro buses and could only visit some spots as both lakes are huge.

Thanks, DLi_hk. We will be there at the end of November. I guess I will miss the peak autumn that time?

Guess 23rd Nov would be a good yardstick. If your visit is later than 23Nov, then likely it'd be over*. By end nov, peak fall foliage would be in Kyoto - where we'd finally head to.

* Kawaguchi-ko is @1000m.
