Suzhou and Tongli on my own without a guide

How hard is it to wander around Suzhou and Tongli on our own. I know we can take a 30 min train from shanghai to Suzhou for $6 and then a taxi to Tongli for about $15 but my question is once we are in those locations is it hard to walk around and get to sights do we really need a guide to show us the gardens etc.? Been looking for walking tours online but havent found them yet?

I've done it on my own and it wasn't difficult at all. I dunno if a taxi costs $15 to get to Tongli that sounds awfully low to me, but maybe I am wrong. I just took the subway to get there and then you connect to a bus that takes you to the entrance. Really not that difficult if you do a minimal amount of research ahead of time.

There is a subway stop called Tongli. From there you take a tourist bus.

Yes you can do it on your own. Cabs are very cheap in china so 15usd makes sense.
