Lampang to Chiang mai via Elephant Conservation centre

Hi, We are thinking of stopping in Lampang on our way from Sukhothai to Chiang Mai, and would like to go to the Elephant Conservation centre. Is it possible to go there and then continue on to Chiang Mai on the same day? It seems to be on the route to Chiang Mai, and would give us an extra night in Chiang Mai. Any advice???

Libby

Hi,

Yes, I don't see why not. It shouldn't take more than 1.5-2 hours to drive from ECC to central Chiang Mai.

Cheers

Hi

Yes ECC and elephants hospital are on the route to Chiangmai. It's pretty much half way between Chiangmai and lampang. The entrance are right on the main road.

Have fun :)

Hi,

I should have added that if you drive via Si Satchanalai to Lampang it should take a bit less than 3 hours, and perhaps 30 mins on to ECC, so with an early start you can have a few hours at the camp and easily get back to CM before dusk. As Pea mentions the entrance is hard to miss on the main road and it's well signposted.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice from forum posters. For anyone else thinking of stopping at the ECC on the way to Chinag Mai using local buses, it is entirely doable. Although some info says that you can catch the Chiang Mai bound bus in Lampang that leaves on the hour, for us this wasn't the case. The bus that departs on the hour seems to be the (air con ) express bus, and the ticket sellers at Lampang bus station were adament that we could not catch that bus. They put us on a very rattly local (but not crowded) bus that we were told left at 9.40, but which then left at 9.20 (go figure!). About an hour later we were dropped off in front of the ECC. It ia about a 5 minute walk to the ECC ticket ofice where we were able to leave our bags while we enjoyed the display / show. Afterwards, we were expecting to have to wait at the highway for quite a while to catch a Chiang Mai bound bus, but when we got back to the highway a bus stopped almost immediately. It took about an hour to get to Chiang Mai. So, all in all, it is very doable to stop at the ECC using local transport running between Lampang and Chiang Mai.
