Two weeks in August

Hi

We're considering a trip next Summer. Two to two and a bit weeks. Would be flying in from London, two adults and three teens 19, 18, and 15. All fairly active.

Would like to do a few days beachside, definitely a few days at least rainforest and would also want to see proboscis monkeys, fireflies and orangutans if at all possible.

Could anyone please suggest:

A prospective itinerary

Good rainforest lodges with decent accommodation and good reliable trips

Decent mid price beach hotels

Any other good things to do.

Many thanks

Amanda

Hi Amanda

We're about to do a two week trip just like the one you're looking for.

We're going in October & booked through Audley Travel who are experts in this field, so it may help to have a chat to them?

I'll let you know how the trip went when we get back :-) there's no commitment to book & the advice is very good.

Hope this helps..good luck :-)

Depends what you would call "mid-price". You are posting in Sandakan Forum, and there are no beach hotels in or around Sandakan, they are over in Kota Kinabalu.

Prices vary greatly from Hostels, 3* / 4* / 5* hotels, so let us know your budget for accommodation overall and we can help.

Amanda G,

Okay London KL/Singapore >KK

Been here before?

The long flight and the sun/heat/humidity can really knock you.

I would suggest two days on the west coast to get over the flight and get used too the heat.

Move over to the east coast and enjoy a tour there, fly back and discover the area around KK then fly out.

This is a rest, fly, explore, fly, rest, then fly home schedule . It gives you a recovery period between activities.

Orangutan's ?

West coast, there are five females in the Lok Kawi zoo, 15 miles south of KK city.

There are none at Rasa Ria resort 45 minutes north of KK.

Too see them you will need to fly from KK too Sandakan and visit the Sepilok rehabilitation centre.

(not ideal)

They can be seen in a natural habitat in North Western Sumatra, South Western Kalimantan, and areas of Eastern Sabah.

Proboscis monkeys, grey langurs, fireflies, monitor lizards, crocs can be seen at the west coast in the mangrove riverine forests at Kilas sungai dan Kiulu Sungai.

Kilas river is two hours south of KK.

Kiulu river is 1.5hrs north of KK.

Beachside?

As mentioned this is easily done on the west coast 10 minutes off shore from KK. Five islands to choose from with some great snorkelling/dive sites.

"Decent mid priced beach hotels?"

This is very subjective.

Have a look /search via T.A. in the KK districts, Tuaran and Kudat they have beach properties rather than big resorts that may give you a choice.

I would suggest also consider staying at those locations and have 2-3 nights at the 5* resorts.

We stay at the Tanjung Aru as it is near KK.

If you choose the hotels in Tuaran/Kudat also consider a stay at Rasa Ria for a few days. Have a look on T.A. the only down side is there is nothing outside the resort and it is £24 taxi to KK each way.

"Anything else to do?"

Yes. Search the top tool bar on T.A. and choose activities you like.

Any questions just re-post, hopefully in the correct forum.

The really top draw dive sites are down at Semporna on the east coast.

Want wildlife/pelagic life visit East coast Sabah and feel Sabah.

We are still here in Borneo and really enjoying it. I would definitely put a couple of nights in at Sandakan/Sepilok as there is lots to see and do over there. We were there for 1.5 days and could hav3 easily filled 2 days with just nature/wildlife (Proboscis monkeys/orangutans/sunbears etc) stuff. We used Mr Arshad to ferry us around while in Sandakan and he was great.

We're at the Shangri la currently and love it, its great for kids but also suitable for adults only too. We have done a few day teips.

Have a fab trip, we have loved it so far.

Definately 100% do the Fireflies if you have not already, its amazing, and only a 5 minute drive away from RR.

RR = ShangriLa Rasa Ria - fireflies can be seen 10 minutes from the resort, the kids would love it.

By the way, Rasa Ria will be perfect for your family (for a 3/4 day stay anyway).

Its 40 minutes north of Kota Kinabalu.

I would fly first to Kuala Lumpur. Adjust to climate and time difference. See Fireflies in the Selangor area (there are several excursions to the fireflies). Spend 2 nights here.

Then fly from KL to Sandakan.

Stay a few nights in a hotel there, or stay at Sepilok Nature Reserve.

Since you are into nature, explore the Kinabantangan Experience (also known as Sukau Rainforest) which takes 3 days/2 nights. Here you can see probiscus monkeys, elephants and lots of birds.

After this, you can go to Danum Valley which is a dense rainforest area. Three ways of staying there, depending on your budget. This also is for 3 days/2 nights.

Then you fly from Lahad Datu to Kota Kinabalu. For beach stay/snorkeling, choose between Gaya Island Resort or one of the Shangri-La resorts.

To me, the best organisation in Sabah is Borneo Eco Tours. They have a fairly good website with all options.
