Can tourists bathe the elephants?

Hi everyone, we're travelling to Sri Lanka next year for our honeymoon and can't find anywhere online which says tourists can help bathe the elephants. It seems you can only watch?

It would make our holiday to think we could bathe them and interact with the elephants,

thank you in advance :)

Hi there,

At Millennium Elephant Foundation, a few kms from the Pinawela orphanage, for sure they can do!

All the best,

It's a place with quite a history! If on youtube you watch the videoclip of Duran Duran - Save a Prayer, that was shot somewhere 1981-1982 and the elephant bathing scenes are at MEF. The clip is a nice commercial for Lankan tourism too ;-)

All the best,

You can ride feed & bath them. All you have to do is buy a package of 10,20 or 30 minutes. Prices start from Rs:2000 just make sure you get a good guide who will allow u allow few extra minutes if you wanna bath them clean! A little tip might do the job!

Good luck

Hi,

Try this website - www.volunteersatwork.org

They are a company based out of New Zealand and they have a really unique experience for travellers wishing to help with the elephants and not exploit them. You can stay overrnght in shared accommodations or you can stay a week or so. Depends on your schedule. It's called the "Elephant Freedom Project" and is far more humane. My friend and I are travelling there next April.

Good luck and enjoy your honeymoon !!!
