maclaren river lodge

Describe the road to the Maclaren River Lodge. We are in a Camry rental car and am wondering if the drive is doable from Anchorage. If we don't drive, how else can we get to the lodge?

Yes you can drive that car to the Lodge, (if the rental car company allows driving on gravel), just go slow and enjoy the drive.

Check out our road trip report from last fall:

But you have to check with your rental car company - many forbid driving on dirt/gravel roads. Know before you book . . . or did you already book?

A simple Google search brought up

http://www.maclarenlodge.com/maps.htm

with 42 miles between Paxson and the lodge.

These are the days of not taking responsibility for your own action, so everyone mentioned (most) rental companies do not allowing travel on gravel roads. You may talk to them, inspect your car carefully when you pick it up, and take on the responsibility yourself to make repairs if there is any need. Get back to Anchorage and wash the car carefully and inspect it again before returning it, so you know exactly what conditions may have changed.

I have never had a chip in the windshield while traveling a gravel road. All of my many chips have come on paved roads. I would give you good odds of having no damage at all.

When are you taking the trip?

(By the way, far best to KEEP YOUR QUESTIONS TO ONE THREAD!!!!, as has been pleaded incessantly by the forum irregulars here again and again).

So, to answer your question "If we don't drive, how else can we get to the lodge?", you can -

*bike (it's about 42 miles)

*hike (it's about 42 miles)

*ski (my friend and college classmate, the indomitable Tim Kelley from Anchorage, left here in the morning and passed by Maclaren just at lunchtime. On the other hand, this is the guy who holds the record skiing the Iditarod Trail Anch-Nome, so you might take a tad longer).

*hitchhike (could take you all day)

*Pay $9,000 and take a Princess Tour, then get off their bus when they stop for lunch at Maclaren Lodge, as they do four times each week.

All sorts of ways!!!!!
