Kruger - Early December - What To Wear, Weather, Etc.

Hi All

I have a few noob questions about my first visit to Kruger/South Africa. Chronologically:

4 nights in Durban

4 nights in Johannesburg

5 nights Cape Town

5 nights Kruger

1 night leftover

1. Early December -- Can I wear shorts for the most part? How about short athletic socks? Will I get eaten alive by mosquitoes or snakes? I'll be two nights in a private reserve and three in Skukuza rest camp with a group tour.

2. Same question for Cape Town. Will I likely be alright wearing shorts, even out to the Cape and up the mountain?

3. Leftover night -- Depart JNB for US at ~10pm. (I cannot miss this flight :o ) The tour company says no problem for a Panoramic Route tour from Hazyview that same day, and then fly back to JNB from HDS in the early evening.

- What's the risk of not making it back to JNB in time for my flight?

- I'm flying out business class on BA. Will I be able to catch a shower and change clothes at one of the JNB lounges?

- Or should I punt and come back to Joburg to spend the extra night?

Thanks in advance !

John

There aren’t any early evening flights from HDS to JNB. I think the Cemair flight is the last one at 2.30pm

I have caught internal flights before and always allow 3 hours or more between flights before an international one back home.

You may get a later flight from Nelspruit, but I haven’t checked.

And yes you can get a shower in the BA lounge.

Thanks Lisa, I do appreciate your input.

You are right, it is Nelspruit Airport that was suggested, with a flight departing at 1640, arriving JNB 1730. Let's see three hours between flights would take me up to 2030, with my flight leaving at 2150, so that is 4+ hour. Are there very often weather delays that time of year? How about traffic or other issues on the Panoramic Route?

I'm just thinking if I am running around the Panoramic Route all day, I may be doing some short hiking, right? That's why I think I will be in need of a shower.

I must sound like a worrier, just don't want to miss that flight!

:)

Another idea I had would be to spend a low-key and relaxing day around the Hazyview area, then heading back to JNB a bit earlier.

I'm realizing it isn't just the flight but also not wanting to travel all sweaty and dirty from running around in caves and so forth. I wonder if there is any way to get in a shower and change of clothes before my flight from Nelspruit to JNB? In any case, I will ask they tour people and see if they have any ideas on that.

Weather delays are not common - but can occur late in the day in that time of year. I wouldn't risk it, myself. I usually take (and recommend) the flight from MQP to JNB at 155PM. As for a shower - surely BA has a connection to a Business Class lounge that would have the shower in its bathroom area.

Hi there!

OK - Let me chime in on the what to wear ordeal - let me tell you, it'll be WAAARRMMM!!!

Dec is heading right into the proper summer, and we're looking at temps of around 30 - 45 degrees - an average of around 35 - 37 degrees.

So make sure to pack the bathing suit! :-)

You can definitely wear shorts and athletic socks - I'd just recommend using Peaceful Sleep to ward off the mozzies - they're most active at dawn and dusk and love the ankle & lower leg area.

The snakes, on the other hand, will do their best to make sure they stay far out of your way! :-)

Warmest regards and have a great trip

Pack sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and walking shoes if you intend to do a bushwalk/walking safari! :-)

Thanks Dave and Jacqui, I really appreciate your perspectives!

So then I will pick up some of that Peaceful Sleep when I get to South Africa, yeah they seem to like my ankles.

PEACEFUL SLEEP is the way to go. We even buy it to bring back with us. We are living in Spain for a year and have just ran out of ours!! bites already. We will be in Kruger for 3 months next year so will fill the boot of the car!
