Johannesburg to Nelspruit transport options and safety

In October we are flying into Johannesburg, arrival at 13:05 pm. We will be doing a self-drive safari with car rental out of Nelspruit airport. We have booked into Krueger park accomodations (Pretoriaskop )for the following night. We are wondering what is our best option for getting from Johannesburg to Nelspruit to spend the night before going on to Krueger the following day? Should we fly from Johnnesburg to Nelspruit on same day as Johannesburg arrival? Or is shuttle service to Nelspruit from Johannesburg airport a better option.?

If we fly, how long should we allow between our Johannesburg and Nelspruit flights to allow for immigration and bag pickup? We will have to check our luggage back in for the onward Nelspruit flight as it will be a separate itinerary. Also, it seems like the car rental companies in Nelpruit close around 18:00. If we dont make it in time to pick up the car we will have to get to our accomodation in Nelspruit another way, then go back to the airport to retreive the car in the morning. I read that Nelspruit after dark is not necessarily safe (is this true?). I also read that it takes 45-60 minutes by taxi from airport to various hotels, yet it is only 11-12 miles? Sorry for so many questions. Any helpful ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

There are people on the forum with more experience then myself but I will give a little input. If it were me, after flying for 20+ hours, I would stay over night and catch an early flight. There are 2 hotels right at the airport, City Lodge and The Intercontinental. You can walk to the hotels and back to the terminal. Flights to Nelspruit start at 7:00. Just out of curiosity, what other camps are you visiting?

Change the car rental to Johannesburg and just drive. Easy and not prohibitively expensive to do one way car rentals in S Africa.

After you land, get through customers, rent car, etc, go to your nearby hotel, have a nice dinner and get to bed early. Have an early breakfast and drive to Pretoriuskop with a stop along the way for shopping for food, cooler, etc. It’s just the easiest and most cost effective option, in my view.

Or do the same with a flight or Ashton’s shuttle to Nelspruit the next day.

What are you doing after Kruger?

stay overnight at Johannesburg so you can rest and relax after long flight. Rent a car from JNB and drive to Kruger next morning to get there by lunch time. Enter thru Malelane gate and drive to Pretoriouskop. I always prefer driving inside the park to driving outside so the fastest way to get inside the park is best for me.

I stayed over at Nelspruit last time and did not feel any safety concerns. We went to the restaurants by the mall for dinner.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. We will look at staying in/near Johannesburg airport the first night.

We are going to Berg-en-dal camp after Pertoriuskop, on a 3 day wilderness hike (through Sanparks), then Skukuza, Satara, Tamboti, and Lower Sabie camps, each for 2-3 nights (16 nights total in the Krueger). Not sure if we will have our fill of safari by then or be excited for more. Then we have 3 nights, 2 days left before flight back to USA from Johnannesburg. We may go to Swaziland on a full, one day escorted trip (let someone else do the driving) out of Nelspruit. We have the same decision to make on the way back, either early flight from Nelspruit (or drive or shuttle) to Johannesburg same day or stay again at airport overnight. Our flight from Johannesburg is 14:10pm.

WOW !! That will be fantastic. Wilderness trail is something i have to target next time.

After that kruger fill, what is swaziland going to add, i wonder. :)

if flight is at 14:10, you have to report by 12-12:30 ? I would drive back the previous afternoon and stay in JNB. Worst times JNB traffic is comparable to Washington DC traffic.

Just from curiosity, how safe is it to hike through Kruger?

You are accompanied by 2 armed rangers so it is relatively safe considering you are walking in a Big 5 park. I have never heard of any incidents on these walks besides a few close calls but as always wild animals can be unpredictable.

As Capepenguin says: "You are accompanied by 2 armed rangers so it is relatively safe considering you are walking in a Big 5 park. I have never heard of any incidents on these walks besides a few close calls but as always wild animals can be unpredictable."

Arguably safer than walking around West Yorkshire on your own ;-)))
