Bathroom stops

Hi Everyone,

We are going to St. Lucia next week and are taking multiple excursions which have loooong car rides. Does anyone know what the bathroom situations are? Are there places to stop if you need to? Is it safe?

Baths no - toilets everywhere

The use of bathroom to mean toilet is not that common in South Africa. Toilet or restroom are more common. It is best to use the local lingo, especially when talking to someone whose first language is not English.

Actually you don't find many restroom stops. The only places to stop at are usually petrol stations and at the bigger petrol stations the restrooms are clean. If you are travelling long distances it is in any case advisable to fill up your car even if your tank is half full.

LOL Megbass,

A lot will depend on where your excursions take you.

If you're talking about long drives on major routes, there are plenty of bathrooms/restrooms at reasonable intervals (it doesn't matter what you call them, they're normally indicated by internationally recognised signs). Most respectable filling stations have restrooms, and most are clean (some of them are pay toilets in order to keep them clean, however these are reasonably rare). Minor routes may have more limited options.

If on the other hand, you're talking about about local trips in the vicinity of St. Lucia ... well, once again it depends where you're going. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi has good restrooms facilities at entrance gates and restcamps, but other excursions may have more limited options. Anyway, bush loos are reasonably easily available.

If you're doing organised excursions, your guide will usually stop every 2-3 hours, but then you should ask your operator these questions.

We'd really need more info on "loooong car rides" to be able to advise better.

We drove all over SA with 2 kids in tow. If you are on a main road there will be gas stations. Lots of shiny new ones with food for purchase and very clean/safe bathrooms. Much nicer than the typical local gas station accommodations back here in the states. More like the ones you find on the interstates only smaller.
