Golden Door Spa / Boulders in Carefree QUESTIONS

Hello, Questions about a possible stay this summer at Boulders in Carefree:

1. How's the hotel and how far is it from Scottsdale?

2. How's the spa? Are the facilities co-ed? We'd like to be together for the spa stuff except for the massage and treatment. What are their policies on topless sunbathing?

3. How are the restaurants at the hotel and how far is it "to town" to get something else to eat?

Thanks in advance. Oh, last question: prices good in summer time.

It's a beautiful hotel with excellent restaurants and one of the best spas around, but it's in Carefree, not Scottsdale. It's a fine place to stay if you want peace and quiet in a truly secluded setting, but it's at leat 45 minutes drive from anything in Scottsdale. Because it's so isolated, prices are lower year round than comparable hotels in Scottsdale, and naturally lowest of all in the summer. Unless it's seclusion you want, I'd stay closer to the action.

The resort is on the far north Scottsdale/Carefree border. That being said you are 13 miles (about 20 minutes) from the Kierland Commons/Scottsdale Quarter shopping centers where there are tons of shopping/dining/nightlife options. You are also only about 3 miles from the heart of Cave Creek with MANY great restaurants as well (head to the Buffalo Chip on a Wednesday or Friday night for an experience you'll never forget, live bull riding outside the bar and a great band inside). The resort is also adjacent to El Pedregal shops which has a couple restaurants but I personally think you are better off driving to Cave Creek. The restaurant at the hotel is decent but IMO overpriced for what you get.

The resort is stunning and all the rooms have been recently renovated. The rates are very good in the summer and I would stay there again in a heart beat.

Also, the spa is one of the best in the valley. They do have a co-ed lounge room as well as a couples treatment suite. Pretty sure they discourage topless sunbathing though.
