Please Critique our GCNP, Sedona, Scottsdale plan

We are a family of 4, kids 12 and 7 a not super active, love science, beautiful views and cushy hotels.

Arrive 9/20 @ 7:40 pm. Pick up rental car, sleep in Anthem or Camp Verde if not too tired (coming from Central time zone).

Thurs. on road by 8. breakfast on the road heading to GC east gate with quick stops at Sunset Crater and Wupatki.

Lunch @ Cameron Trading Post.

Arrive GCNP @ ?? (Is 2:30 a reasonable estimate?) then do Desert View and few more stops, arriving to Maswick south by 5:00. Grab food at the cafeteria and walk the rim towards Yavapai observation pt. To eat and catch the sunset (6:22 sunset). Maybe do a ranger talk in the evening?

Friday up early to catch the sunrise (6:16) on Bright Angel Trail (go 20-30 minutes down). Visit the burros in the corral. Late breakfast at El Tovar (skip this and just head back to hotel??). Check out hotel, load up car. Should we do some of the views west or prioritize heading to Sedona??

Exit Tusayan, head to Sedona, lunch at Cowboy club. Check in Amara. If time relax at pool. Grab picnic (is wildflower bread co convenient) for dinner and head to Red Rock Crossing for sunset. Early bed!

Sat. Leisurely wake up and breakfast @hotel. Pink Jeep Broken Arrow tour @10. Pick up lunch from Indian Gardens. Do partial West Fork hike (will we be able to get parking this late in the day?). Should we go back to hotel for poolside dinner or stay in vicinity for our 8 pm astronomy tour? If we stay where would be a good dinner spot?

Sunday head towards Phoenix via 179 and I-17. Is there time for another quick hike or should we just make stops at views along the way?

Another decision: boys are going to a game at Chase Field for 1 pm. Should we drive and park at chase field and the girls uber to the Scott resort or vice versa - drive to Scott, boys uber to game? Evening enjoy resort and relax. Maybe dinner somewhere in Scottsdale.

Monday am is open - just pushed back flight to leave at 8pm, so could enjoy lazy river at resort and then visit the desert Botanical garden? Or go to the musical instruments museum. Other suggestions?

Thanks for any help!

Stay at Anthem. Better to drive to Camp Verde and beyond in daylight, especially since your body clocks will be 2 hours ahead.

Your astronomy tour probably won't be in Oak Creek Canyon, so you'll want to head back to town after Westfork.

9/20...I would choose Anthem.

Thursday...Nice. Timeline looks reasonable but depending on how much you enjoy places on the way and various overlooks, your exact arrival times may vary. Once inside the park and after Watchtower/Desert view, many of the overlooks are similar. If you are enjoying a place, don't feel obligated to rush on to the next one.

Friday...Good, El Tovar breakfast is a classic. The food is good and the hotel historic, good to have in your memory bank. No need to take in the west side overlooks and have to wait around for shuttles...you will have seen equal vistas already and you don't have all that much time for your trip...IMO. Head to Sedona asap. Yes Wildflower Bread is convenient, right on the way from the hotel when heading for RRC.

Saturday...its going to be too late to reliably find parking at West Fork after that PJ tour. West Fork first... early... with a PJ tour for later in the morning. There are lots of dinner possibilities...what type of food do you enjoy/budget? Your Astronomy tour will be from an area west of Uptown where there is room and no interference to block views. So you could dine just about anywhere and still be on time for your 8 PM tour.

Sunday...Along the 179, stop just to see the Chapel of the Holy Cross...then at Bell rock for a short farewell hike...then on to Phoenix. You will need about 2 hours for the drive from the Bell Rock area to Phoenix. All the morning depends on how early you get up and on the road. Don't know enough about transpo in Phoenix to give good advice on that.

Monday....I always recommend the Cosanti Forge just north of Scottsdale...its a very cool place to visit. You can enjoy the Star Wars architecture and also buy a very unique Arizona Souvenir. Kids love it too....Maybe even more than the Botanic Gardens or the Musical Instrument museum. Taliesin West is another nearby treasure if you know Frank Lloyd Wright..

Wonderful ideas for Scottsdale Mary Ellen that I didn't know about! Thanks so much for wading through my long post. I'll look into changing the time of the pink jeep tour.

This is going to be a short but very nice trip for you I think! We now have several of the wonderful Cosanti Bells in our garden. They are souvenirs that will never rust or wear out. We did have to put some felt on the clappers because we live where it gets very windy sometimes!

You may fall in love with the area...pick up brochures and and information in case you want to plan a return trip sometime. A trip exactly like yours began our love for the area. We were infected with Red Rock Fever and now Sedona is in our blood. ;-)
