Feb/March Stay

My wife and I and adult son will be staying in Sedona from Feb. 13-March 13 and were wondering what clothes to bring with us? We all want to pack as light as we can but want to make sure to bring the right clothes for the weather conditions. We have never been to Sedona/Arizona before.

As for day trips, how far could we reasonably expect to drive to and back in one day(in any direction)? What is the drive to the South Rim like? How far is the drive to the Skywalk?

From other posts, it looks like we will need a parking pass, is there one that is good for a month?

Any other suggestions that you may have for us would be greatly appreciated.

Much thanks

Expect winter weather in Feb/Mar in northern AZ. Nights will be as cold as you get in Michigan. Days will be milder and with much more sun. Bring clothing that you can wear in layers. Keep in mind that everything in Sedona is casual, so dresses and sport coats are not needed. Jeans and casual wear is the norm. But sweaters and a jacket and hat and gloves should be included. Snow could happen, but it won't last and certainly won't disturb your vacation plans. We play golf every day here.

There are plenty of day trip options and you might even want to consider some over nights. The Grand Canyon is only 2 hours away and Page/Lake Powell is 3 hours. Both can be done as day trips, but those places have enough to see and do to justify and over night stay. The sky walk is about a 3-4 hour drive and not recommended, especially if you will be driving a rental car. Besides it's a rip off. Go to the GCNP at the South Rim instead. It's closer and it's the REAL Grand Canyon. Other places like Payson and Prescott are fun day drives and of course PHX to the south is on;y 2 hours. Slightly further and worthy of an over night is Monument Valley or Canyon de Chelly. You can buy an annual Red Rock Pass if you intend to do a lot of hiking and parking at Forest land and trail heads I believe it costs $40. If visiting parks and national monuments is something you'd like to do, you might consider buying an annual park pass for $80. That will get you almost everywhere.

You can also do a day trip to Flagstaff, old mining town, or Prescott in an hour or a little more. The downtown area of Prescott is a square centered around the County Courthouse. There are some interesting places to have lunch. Both towns have malls if you need to do some shopping.

In the "Top Questions About Sedona" (upper right on this webpage), you will find info about a day trip to the Grand Canyon and about the Red Rock Pass.

Go to the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center in Uptown Sedona or the Ranger District Visitors Center just south of Sedona on Hwy 179 when you arrive and they will give you lots of info, maps, hiking trails, visitors guide, etc.

We arrive in Phoenix at 3 pm and will be picking up a rental car and would like to get to our condo(Canyon Mesa Country Club) before dark if possible. We would also like to do a little grocery shopping. Suggestion for initial grocery shopping would be appreciated. Are there grocery stores in Sedona or should we stop along the way?

Thanks

If you want to get to Sedona by dark you'll need to get on the road and get here directly. Sunset in Feb will be around 6PM and you will just make it if you land at 3PM. And it will be very dark. Canyon Mesa CC is easy enough to find, but finding your unit may be tougher in the dark. The streets in there wind around and it's easy to get disoriented. There are no street lights anywhere in Sedona.

The closest grocery store would be the IGA on Verde Valley School Road, within about a mile of Canyon Mesa. But it will be easier to go there after you get checked in and settled and know where you are.
