Struggling to find a very nice beach hotel/resort.

Does a very nice 4 star+ hotel/resort exist in Carlsbad close to or on the beach? If not, what are some good alternatives?

Have you looked at La Costa? It's not too far from the beach and depending on when you're coming you might want to be a bit inland for a higher probability of sun.

LOVE their Roman shower!

If you mean a real 4 star resort, no. The nice resort hotels are inland and by Legoland. There is the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort, Grand Pacific Palisades Resort and La Costa for the 4 stars and the the Park Hyatt (formerly Four Seasons) Aviara for a 5 star resort.

That doesn't mean the 3 stars by the beach are not nice places, they are, just not grand resorts.

The Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort is owned by the same people who own the Sheraton and Grand Pacific and it is very nice,

The Tamarrack Beach Resort is great too.

Given a choice between the beachside 3 stars and the inland 4 stars, I'd go with the beach ones that are in the village area of Carlsbad.

The only place right on the beach in Carlsbad is the Beach Terrace Inn as far as I know and it isn't a resort as such. The location is terrific, though, right on the water and in the village.

We always stay at the Hilton Garden Inn, which is steps from South Carlsbad Beach, but you do have the PCH between the hotel and the water (same as the Tamarack). The ocean view rooms do have nice views, but it is a Garden Inn and thus has only a pool for resort-like amenities. We find it to be peaceful, however.

The same group is opening the Hilton Carlsbad Ocean Front Resort just a few miles further south in July 2012. I guess it is technically in Carlsbad but it is very close to Leucadia. The beach is very nice there but you still have the PCH between the hotel and the beach.

I'm with Scottc in that I would pick lower star rating for the beach over inland and higher rating. I have never found either the Tamarack or the Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort to look overly appealing to me, but that is a pretty subjective point. The Beach Terrace Inn I've always wanted to try but the rates were a little too high for us the times I've considered them.

After tons of research I booked the Beach Terrace Inn. I think it shoud be fine. We arrive June 16th and are going to Legoland and Safari Park. I wanted to be near the beach and the village so this shoud be perfect. The hotel provides continental breakfast so that will be nice. Thanks for all of the help! :)
