How to make the most of a wet XMas week?

We'll be in the San Diego area next week. We were thinking of making a day trip to Catalina Island one day, visit Balboa Park a day or two, Coronado, La Jolla, do a few hikes, etc. Not planning any water activities due to cold temperatures.

Looks like rain is in the forecast for several days with the temperatures ranging from the upper 30s to upper 60s F for the week with no real sunny days. :(

Our plans are flexible at this time. We're not into shopping and prefer the outdoors. Is the weather forecast going to wash out the trip? For this time of the year and the El Nino forecast, would you have any general planning/scheduling advice, given our above list of destinations and activities? We are two middle-aged fit adults.

Also, we have some <restaurant.com> gift certificates that we would like to put to use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (we're staying in Oceanside). We are vegetarian and generally mindful of the ingredients in what we consume though we can do junk and decadence at times :). No problems with dairy, carbs, gluten, nuts etc. Cuisine type is not as important. Would be interested in anything different from the usual, as well as local food specialities, if any.

I will ask some specific hiking questions in a separate thread.

Thank you.

That report you showed shows almost no chance of rain by Southern California standards. The highest is only 30%. I would not worry until the % chance gets to about 80+.

Curious why you are staying in Oceanside when everything you want to do is in San Diego (except Catalina).

In any case, I wouldn't take a weather forecast two weeks out seriously. Lots can happen in the meantime.

I don't think of Catalina as a day trip and it isn't a fun one in winter if the weather is bad.

I agree that to me Catalina is an overnight trip.

The forecasts are very deceiving as you don't know where the rain exactly will fall in San Diego County unless you are looking at local radar. In addition the rain may not fall at all if the chance is only 30%. Oceanside is the very northernmost town in SD County so just be prepared to drive to activities (or opt to take the train into downtown).

We don't have many indoor activities here besides a few museums so you'll have to just wait and see what happens.

Hi Sat - I don't see anywhere in that forecast where it mentions rain ! ?

I would forget Catalina this time of year, personally. There is nothing there that you can't find an any seaside town like Laguna Beach, Carlsbad, La Jolla, Coronado. Especially since you aren't doing any water sports.

Plan on spending a lot of time on the Freeway and possibly lots of traffic staying in Oceanside and visiting all the places you want to visit 45 min to 1 hr away in San Diego.

I agree, Catalina is an expensive trip, and the seas may be high if there is rain (our typical pattern is rain, then clearing, but with a LOT of wind for a day or two).

For rain days, consider museums, long and leisurely lunches, bowling, going to the movies, shopping in indoor malls, or lots of Netflix :)

We aren't known for being great drivers in the rain, so it would be a poor idea to get out on the freeways and drive any long distances.

Thank you folks.

Perhaps El Nino and reports of the west coast (NW) getting torrential rains is clouding my judgement even as I acknowledge the frequent inaccuracy of weather forecasts several days out. The graphics show full sun till the day we arrive and also after we leave (click on "Next 5 Days") and clouds during our stay. I like the full sun symbol better than the cloud symbol. If the 10% falls where we are, it's 100% for us :-). I've noted that, IYO, the current forecast means almost no chance of rain in SoCal.

Oceanside came first (opportunity to stay in a condo there and hang out with a friend), other activities and plans were built around it. I assume most people will not be on the freeways, given the school and office holidays and other family XMas activities. If some of our hanging out is (hanging) in the car, we're ok with it and don't mind driving 30-45 mins to get to where we want, though recommendations for other closer destinations/activities are always welcome.

We'll drop Catalina.

I would put Mission San Luis Rey on your radar.

http://www.sanluisrey.org/

It is one of the most overlooked attractions in San Diego County.

Then there is the SD Zoo Safari Park with its new tiger cub in Escondido.

You are also close to Temecula Wine Country.

You are not too far from San Diego's casinos too if it really is rainy.

Pala, Harrah's and Valley View are the closest.
