Oceanside Suggestions

Hello. My 18-year-old daughter and I are traveling to the area in mid July. We'd appreciate suggestions on interesting and/or unusual things to do in the area. We're not particularly interested in Sea World, Disney, or attractions such as that. We like to explore, and don't mind driving but would like to keep within a two-hour drive (unless it's something spectacular).

We are open to any ideas!

Thanks!

Just up the road in Dana Point, Capt Daves Dolphin Safari does whale/dolphin trips year round. One of their boats has underwater viewing pods.

We enjoyed touring the Mission at San Juan Capistrano which is north of Dana Point. Simply touring the shops along PCH in those towns, especially the galleries, can be fun

Why all the travel only north? You are in San Diego County and no suggestions there yet.

Mission San Luis Rey is right in Oceanside:

Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad:

outdoor street fair/farmer's market in Oceanside:

San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas:

Swamis meditation garden in Encinitas also:

Tons of beaches to explore from Oceanside south:

Torrey Pines State Reserve to walk/hike:

All that without even getting into the main city area of San Diego which has even more!

We are not just about Sea World!!

Those are just suggestions along the coast. There are also mountain and desert areas to explore within San Diego County so even more choices!

What about the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park. Can't think of a better way to spend the day.

I didn't even mention those things or the places to see in the rest of the city!!

Walking on the embarcadero and seeing the ships.

Visiting La Jolla cove to see the seals and sea lions in their native environment.

Walking through the sculpture trail on campus at the Univ. of Ca. in San Diego.

There is tooooo much to write about!

For some great American history, look at touring the Midway. Next to it is a passenger Ferry that goes across the harbor to Coronado Island. Or you can drive to Coronado over the bridge and explore the Hotel del Coronado, perhaps enjoy their high tea together or a beverage on their Sunset Bar.

These are PERFECT and just what we're looking for. We're also going to Julian so any other thoughts for "off the beaten path" are greatly appreciated!

Thank you for this thread. We are visiting Oceanside next week; mostly to visit friends but also to explore. These are just the places we love to see. I've got Torrey Pines and the Meditation Garden on my list. Plus the missions!!

One question, though - are there any beaches/coves that have good tidal pool action. We stayed with friends in Ocean Beach once and walked down to the end of their street and found some steps that led to a cove with tidal pools. We won't be in this area for this trip, but wondering if there is anything similar north of San Diego and more or less in the Oceanside area.

Do you enjoy hiking? If you're going to be in Julian, Cuyamaca State Park is nearby and Stonewall Peak is a very nice hike that takes you to the top of a granite peak where you can get a very impressive view. The Mount Laguna area has many, many miles of hiking trails. We were just there over the weekend and did a nice 8 mile hike around the Laguna Meadow.

As for Oceanside, I'd also suggest Mission San Luis Rey. Walking out on the pier is always fun and the Thursday night Sunset Market is fun.....lot's of merchandise and food to choose from.
