San Gabriel

My parents have to go to San Gabriel, CA for a couple of days to see a sick relative. They would like to stay in a hotel near the relative's home. Do you know of any decent hotels? They will be in the S. Walnut Grove Ave. area (91776)

For reasonable cost, we like the Doubletree in Montebello. Its across from a shopping center, nice large rooms (we get the king with the full size couch), and its an easy drive to San Gabriel. The best place in the area is the Ritz Carlton in Pasadena.

Pasadena is not far from San Gabriel, and we've enjoyed staying at the Westin and the Sheraon. For a reasonable cost the Best Western on Colorado Blvd (Pasadena again) is very inexpensive, reasonable stay (basic Best Western), and easy to drive in the area. (We have relatives in the area so go fairly often. We like any of the above.....). Best to all and sorry to hear about your sick relative.

Is the relative at a hospital and if so, which one? That will help to fine tune the above.

There aren't too many hotels in the San Gabriel area. The Doubletree that was mentioned is pretty nice, and might be the closest one to where you have to go. It's right across the street from a mall and is right off the freeway. There's also a Holiday Inn Express next door. If it's within your budget, there's a fairly new Hilton in San Gabriel that's REALLY nice! It's only about a year or two old. It's on the other side of San Gabriel though, so it's about a 10-15 min. drive from the S. Walnut Grove area.

Agree that the Ritz in Pasadena is the nicest, if you can afford that. Pasadena has tons of hotels, but is quite a bit farther away.

Thank you for the replies.

I 've been told that there is a Quality Inn on Las Tunas Dr. I can only find Century Inn. Has there been a name change? More importantly, is that a safe place? It's the closest to the relative's home.

There is an array of hotels-- Residence Inn, Springhill (sp?) Suites, Embassy Suites, Sheraton-- in nearby Arcadia, about a 10 minute drive from where your parents will be visiting. This area is pleasant, suburban, quite a bit more upscale than Montebello and possibly a bit closer than most locations in Pasadena. These hotels are just on or near Huntington Drive, a major street that is easy to drive.

Convenient to restaurants and other businesses.

By the way, San Gabriel is at the center of the biggest Chinese immigrant community in the USA. Very vibrant, lots of interesting shops and restaurants. Let us know if they would like suggestions of this nature.

Pasca has some good suggestions about Arcadia as well.

I don't know of the Quality Inn on Las Tunas. Do you know the cross street??

Las Tunas runs through 4 different cities: Alhambra, San Gabriel, Temple City, and Arcadia. Overall, they're all safe areas. Mostly residential suburbs.

That Hilton hotel is a good suggestion. Again, if it's within your budget. It's on Valley Blvd., which runs parallel to Las Tunas.
