I am leaving LA with my family today (3 teens). We think we may visit a friends beautiful home in Ojai and spend a night in Santa Barbara if we can find a place to stay. We want to see a great spot for sea lions. Thought about sand dunes in Pismo beach. Thought about Monterrey. We have two nights and are headed to San Fransisco. Any suggestions.

You should have planned this at least two or three weeks in advance. This is the peak of tourist season right now on the Central Coast, so you may end up staying in less satisfactory places like Lompoc or Salinas. If you haven't been yet (you didn't clarify if you are a local or from out of state), definitely stop at Hearst Castle and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

What is your lodging budget? We stayed at The Lemon Tree Inn in Santa Barbara in March. Check them out, there is a great pool there. ⛱

I'd skip over Santa Barbara as a place to stay for the night and head to Pismo Beach and night 2 stay in Monterey/Pacific Grove, otherwise the drive SB to Monterey is really long when you are trying to sightsee things.

Where can we see sea lions best and get the closest view along the coast? Would it be Monterrey ?

Monterey Bay would be a good place to see sea lions and otters. The elephant seals at Piedras Blancas west of Hearst Castle are recommended. Sea lions are also seen at San Francisco's pier, out on the Channel Islands, and on the buoy at Santa Barbara Harbor.

You might try Cambria or Cayucos area. It is about 20 minutes drive to a beautiful coastline with sea lions and elephant seals. You can also go to Heart Castle. http://www.elephantseal.org/

If you opt for Ventura/Santa Barbara area. You might consider a trip to Channel Islands National Park for the day. Their is a lot of wonderful sea life and you can spot dolphins, sometimes whales, on the crossing. Here is some information and a downloadable map sbadventureco.com/blog/…

Have a great trip. Hope this message is not too late! :) -Suz

This was very helpful. Thank you . We stopped at the rookery north of San Simeon last night based on your recommendation. We are headed to point Lobos today. I appreciate it !
