Getting a walk up camping spot late may

We're looking to find a camping spot in late may and were wondering if we would have any trouble getting a camping spot near the end of May or if walk up spots will be hard to come by. Spots we're currently looking at are sig creek and little Molas lake.

It really depends on whether you are looking for weekend days or during the week, rustic or established campgrounds, etc.. Campgrounds in Colorado tend to be booked up very quickly. Most have a 180 day window for reservations so people are making plans very early. I booked for May 18-19 in November of last year. There are established 'boondocking' sites where camping is allowed. No reservations, No amenities, no water, no toilets, etc.. You would have to check areas where this is allowed.

Little Molas doesn't typically open until June 1. Info on reservations here: molaslake.com/mapclips/MolasLakeCampgroundRe…

Reservations for Little Molas open Jan 1. You make reservations here: http://www.molaslake.com/reservations.html It looks like most of June is already booked. It is unclear if they have any walk ups.

This is incorrect info. This info is about Molas Lake, known locally as Big Molas, and the campground located there which is managed by the town of Silverton.. This Lake and Campground are located along Highway 550 near Silverton, CO. It's a gorgeous Campground and you can get a campsite if they have a vacancy that day. Little Molas Lake is another lake in the vicinity. You access Little. Molas via a one mile drive on a forest service road off 550 near Big Molas. There is a small forest service Campground at little Molas. That forest service road usually opens by June 1.

Sig Creek Campground has nine sites and does not accept reservations. Access to Sig Creek is along Forest Service Rd 578. Dispersed camping is allowed along this road as well. To get to this road drive about 25 miles north of Durango and turn into Purgatory Resort. Then follow the signs to Hermosa Park Rd( FR 578). The forest service Rd to Little Molas Lake is currently closed for the season. It usually opens by June 1. Check the San Juan National Forest website for road updates and fire restrictions. We are in an exceptional drought in SW Colorado and Stage 1 fire restrictions are in place. This means, for example, no campfires except those in fire rings in campgrounds. Camp fires in makeshift fire rings such as those found in dispersed camping areas are not permitted. Also smoking, tobacco or pot, is not permitted outdoors. More stringent restrictions could be in place when you visit.

Thanks for pointing out the difference between Molas Lake and Little Molas, animasjoe. I had been looking for a link to the info & got interrupted. Here's a link to the forest service page listing road info and a phone number for the Columbine Ranger District.

No reservations accepted at Little Molas so yes campsites are first come first served or walk up. Yes the pic in your post is Little Molas. You can also access the Colorado Trail at Little Molas.
