Train or not to train for the last bit

We are at the stage of planning our onward destination after our time in Aspen and Vail (thanks to great TA experts)

We are trying to decide whether we should catch the Zephyr train to San Francisco from Glenwood Springs on 8 January or if we should skip the train and have the extra days elsewhere.

Departure time is just after 1pm. We don't mind how late the train might be getting into SF as we will add a day there to be safe but would be disappointed if it meant we would go through the best scenery in darkness. If the train left Glenwood closer to dark due to delays would we miss the best parts?

Thank you again for your help.

Truly the very best part is between Denver and Glenwood Springs. If you head West from Glenwood, you will cross the desert at night and should go thru the Sierras during daytime.

Thank you for your reply. I should have explained that we fly into Denver, will overnight there and then we catch the train to Glenwood Springs - from there on to Aspen, etc.

So wondering if we should just fly onwards or do more of the Zephyr from Glenwood Springs going west. Is the Sierras worth seeing in winter?

The train is a good way to go. My wife has used it on the route from Glenwood back to Salt Lake City a number of times. If the train is on time, you will have three or four hours of spectacular desert scenery. Yes, the route up to Donner Summit through the Sierras is spectacular. The rest of the trip is mixed value scenery or night. It does take away a full day over flying. You could take the train to Grand Junction to catch a flight, or fly non-stop (I think) out of Aspen.

Have fun.
