Good area to stay in for young (20-something) married couple

My husband and I will be traveling to Florida within the next two weeks for business (mainly for him) for roughly 4-5 days during the week. Business will be conducted in the Deerfield Beach area, but I am having a hard time finding a place nearby (no further than 20-30 mins away from Deerfield) to stay. I would like us to stay in a place that has easy access to food, entertainment/activities that I could occupy myself with while he is conducting business, as well as close access to the beach. I would prefer a hotel that has a lazy river but I haven't been able to find a place that is reasonably priced (less than $130 a night) that has that so I've crossed that off my dream list. I am not much of a shopper (i will window shop though) and I am not interested in casinos unless it houses good eateries (I am a foodie at heart). I've read that Fort Lauderdale can be overpriced and touristy, so i am looking to get the most bang for my buck even if it requires driving around (we will have access to a car), taking local transportation or walking to destinations that are roughly 1/2 mile - 1 mile away.

Any suggestions? I've looked into Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Delray Beach and I still have mixed feelings about where to stay that will offer convenient entertainment, food, beach access and activities for a reasonable price.

I think with your budget, and wants (esp the lazy river thing) you need to lower your sights.

Generally speaking, lazy rivers are for inland resorts (such as around orlando) as the beaches of FL are so very nice that people in general dont need lazy rivers. Esp as these attract children like flies.

Once you choose where you want to be, and maybe choose an area near the beach but has public transport (most likely buses which I dont choose myself) then we can say of that is an area you want to stay in or not.

So, stay near his conferance, or rent a car and use it to get around by day.
