Beach questions, what to bring, how far is the walk..

My family of 4 is headed to Pensacola for two nights July 3rd and 4th. We're driving through on a road trip and really only have the 4th. Our top priority is the beach but I'm open to other ideas as well! We have a 6 and 4 year old.

First any specific beach recommendations? Sounds like there is a quietwater beach that is good for kids but my oldest is hoping to body board so I'm thinking the main beach?

Since we'll be staying in downtown how early should we head out to the beach in the morning? And how long will it take to get to the beach on the 4th?

We're used to Texas gulf beaches and usually bring a pop-up shade, is that allowed on Pensacola beaches? It's not small so if we have a long walk that would also be more challenging.

I've been reading through the forums and they are great! I'd love any other tips/ideas you guys have!

Quietwater is not on the gulf.

Bring your popup shade. The beach will be packed. There are many public areas where you can enjoy the beach without being near the pier, so know that isn't your only option - that's where most of the congestion will be.

If you're coming to the beach for 4th of July, you basically need to get a spot there on the 3rd.

Thanks MsCheap1! Is there a specific place to park for less crowded areas or just park and keep walking until it's less crowded?

tiff21x, so people setup on the beach on the 3rd and leave their stuff there? We'll get into town that evening and could go straight to the beach and setup our pop up tent. Is that safe, will someone steal it?

Any thoughts on travel time from downtown to the beach and what time we should leave?

Thanks guys, I appreciate it!!

VegGirl, if you plan on going to Casino beach(the part of beach near the pier and big beach ball tower) you should be fine getting a spot if you leave in the a.m.. maybe around 9 or 10am. If you plan on going to the Via De Luna side, past The Portifinos, I've seen people stake the pop up the night before and leave them there, especially farther east as if you're going to Navarre past the Gulf Islands National Seashore. I don't know if these people are sleeping in their cars in the parking lots or what. But I personally would've leave your pop up overnight, just because of the Beach Patrol. As Im sure that would ensue a fine or something.

As to the question, of course you can bring a pop up shade, if you want to find a more secluded spot I would suggest heading past the Portifinos on Via Deluna as there are at least 3 areas to park and it gets less crowded if you drive down that way. Only minus is there are no lifeguards in this area, so beware of rip currents and things like that. Have fun!!

Hi from Texas too! The other members are right about getting there early. We used to stay with my grandparents in Gulf Breeze and then get up at 6am to be on the bridge to Pensacola beach by 7am. On 4th of July weekend it is not unusual for the traffic to just be backed up on the bridge for an hour. Here is another tip- do not park on the sand, especially if you have a car or suv with just street tires. If you are going to try that then at least bring your own tow strap and some cash for someone to pull you out. Over the years I got by with it by driving a Jeep Wrangler, but guess what- those can get stuck too! Just ask me how I know...

Have fun and think of us back here in Texas just wishing we were there!!!
