Questions about the Indy Gran Price 5/12/18

Hello! Going to the GP... trying to understand the prices and locations of seating and have been to their site... but wondering if general admission offers seats or standing only. If anyone has been and can offer tips that would be great! We are leaving Chicago 8am 5/12, stopping at Harry & Izzy’s Northside for lunch about 12:15. The race is then at 3:45 so we should have enough time to get to the track, park and get in. Celebrating a birthday and Mother’s Day! Should be a fun weekend! Thanks for any comments!

General admission is infield only. Bring a cooler (no bigger than 18x14x14) with food and adult beverages. Bring a blanket/camping chair too. There are some great spectator mounds to watch the action.

Here's the policy and a video of last year's race so you can scout out some good spots. Note the spectator mounds at some of the turns. Lunch on the northside at 12:15 (figure and hour/hour and a half for lunch) would be pushing it to make the green flag and/or get the spot on the mound you like. Traffic nowhere near Indy 500 traffic....but still there's traffic.

We sit in the Corner 7 stands (at the end of the backstretch) - this is one of the overtaking zones and there are quite a few people sitting on the mounds in the infield.

The other prime seating area is around the first turn - Stands J & H and the Northwest Vista if you are looking for seats.

I would agree that you will likely have a difficult time getting a prime spot on the viewing mounds if you don't arrive at the track until 2:30 or later. Keep in mind the time it will take to walk from where you park to the spectator mounds in the infield. The first race of the day starts at 9:15 a.m. (USF 2000 race) so the mounds will up early.

I would advise getting to the track as early as possible to find a good GA spot. There will be plenty to see and do all day. Maybe dinner at Harry & Izzy's on the way home?

We purchased tickets in the stands and a parking pass...does anyone know if there is food and drinks for sale inside the track or a restaurant inside? Thanks!

There are numerous food concession stands at the Speedway - not sure how many will be open behind the Paddock, A, B, J and C stands as many of those seats are not available for sale. The largest concentration of food stands will be open behind the Pagoda - in the infield.

There is no restaurant open to the public and the food stands are, for the most, not what anyone would call fine dining. Think fair food - burgers, fries, dogs, pizza, fried pork tenderloins - probably fried everything else. Except beer - there will be lots of beer, but they haven't figured out how to bread and fry it yet.

There will be a few stands that will have something "better" than the rest, but if you are expecting anything even close to your original plan of Harry & Izzy's, you will be greatly disappointed.

Oh thanks! No I was expecting fried or picnic food, which is fine. We were offered a couple of passes to the garage and pit area for 2 of our group so we all may go and just hang out while the 2 chosen ones get to do the pit area prior to the race. It is worth it to have them enjoy this special event and skip Harry & Izzy's. Just making sure hamburgers or something is available! Great answer, really appreciate it!

If they are headed to the garage / pit area, then you will definitely want to hang out behind / underneath the Tower Terrace suites. That will be the best area for shade on Saturday as it heats up. I'm sure you will find something.

While I typically bring in a few sandwiches for the 500, we generally just run with the track food for the Grand Prix. Not as long of a day and many less people there (of course that is offset by many less stands open. I will be bringing a small cooler to the Grand Prix for the first time this year with some cold bottles of water.
