what to do with a 16 year old?!

We are thinking of heading over to Toronto and Niagara for 5 nights next July, then 2 nights in Boston before 4 or 5 nights in Cape Cod and then our last 5 nights in New York and then home. The Cape Cod part is for relaxation but also to see wildlife etc. My daughter loves marine life and we would like to do some whale and dolphin watching and anything else that you guys can recommend.

Is Provincetown the place to stay or where else would you recommend? Should we drive from Boston or fly as I hear the roads can be very busy at that time of year. Do we need a car to tour around the Cape? Many thanks in advance!

You can stay in P-town. It's a lot of fun. It would be easy for whale watching. You can take a ferry from Boston to P-town. But, if you want to explore the cape, you probably should drive so that you have a car.

You can do a bit of exploring the Cape by bus but it is not that easy. There is a whale watch from Provincetown and you should take one of Art's Dune Tours. Lots of interesting shops. Visit the Provincetown Museum and Pilgrim Monument. Wellfleet is also a nice town to visit and the back roads on the Bay side of Truro are a nice drive. Lots of nature walks and hikes in the area.

If your daughter is interested in marine life, check out the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies -- coastalstudies.org -- They offer a number of public programs during the summer, not just lectures but participatory programs like field trips.

You will need a car to explore the Cape. Provincetown enjoys a vibrant gay culture, great nightlife, galleries, shops, and fantastic restaurants. You can take a ferry from Boston to Provincetown and base yourselves there without needing a car.

The Audubon Sanctuary in Wellfleet is on the bay and is another good place to learn about nature. We've seen seals swimming south from the beach in Provincetown, Truro, and Wellfleet. Sometimes it's one or two, other times there are big groups.

You will definetly want to explore the bay side beaches at low tide between Brewster and Orleans and visit the natural history museum in Brewster, which includes guided tours through the wetlands and tidal pools. If you want to explore the Cape you will really need to have a car. I recommend staying in places like Chatham, Brewster, Orleans or Wellfleet which are more centrally located and not nearly as crowded as Provincetown.
